About the Item

RINKO KAWAUCHI (*1972, Japan) Untitled, from the series 'M/E' 2020 Lambda print Sheet 75 x 50 cm (29 1/2 × 19 7/10 in.) Edition of 3 (#1/3) print only This photograph belongs to the series 'M/E'. M/E is a new series Kawauchi began shooting in 2019. The letters stand for ‘Mother’ and ‘Earth’, combining to form both ‘Mother Earth’ and ‘Me’. Immediately, the series’ images of Iceland’s volcanoes and ice floes and Hokkaido’s snowy landscapes may seem distant and unrelated to the everyday scenes from the COVID-19 pandemic that accompany them in the series. However, both types of images depict events now taking place on the planet we live on, and Kawauchi’s artistry alerts us to the connection between them. This series invites the viewer to reconsider a range of questions about the workings of human life and our relationship with nature. Kawauchi, currently one of the most famed contemporary female Asian artists, is a recipient the eminent Annual Infinity Award (2009) from New York’s International Centre of Photography, in the category Art, and similarly was shortlisted in 2012 for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. She has joined and held many group and solo shows both at home and abroad, with major solo exhibitions in the Fondation Cartier pour l’art Contemporain in Paris, London’s The Photographers’ Gallery, the Hasselblad Centre in Gothenburg, Semear Museu de Arte Moderna de Sao Paulo, the Vangi Sculpture Garden Museum in Shizuoka, or Brussels’ ARGOS Centre for Art & Media. Major group exhibitions to date include those at Munich’s Haus der Kunst, the Huis Marseille in Amsterdam, Museum of Contemporary Art, inTokyo, Toyota Municipal Museum of Art in Aichi, or the Brighton Photo Biennial 2010: New Documents. Her unique approach is like a “drawing senses”, embracing motifs of every day details as well as cycle of life and its transience, and has been admired by art lovers all over the world. – Color Photography, Rinko Kawauchi, Japanese, Abstract, Light, Reflection, Spiritual, Retrospective, exhibited work, new
