Attique du midi, Aile du midi, chateau de Versailles, photographed by Robert Polidori. All prints are limited edition. Available in multiple sizes. High-end framing on request. All prints are done and signed by the artist. The collector receives an additional certificate of authenticity from the gallery. This Robert Polidori photograph captures a striking scene in the Attique du Midi at the Palace of Versailles, showing a moment during the palace's restoration or maintenance work. The image centers on a large historical painting, partially covered by translucent protective plastic sheeting, mounted on a wall covered in blue damask fabric with a classical pattern. The painting appears to be a historical scene, likely depicting Napoleon or another French historical figure, as glimpses of military uniforms and formal dress from that era can be seen through the plastic covering. The painting is housed in an ornate gilt frame characteristic of the palace's decorative style. The wall treatment is particularly notable - the rich blue damask fabric creates a luxurious backdrop, while a decorative border with botanical motifs in warm oranges and greens runs horizontally along the wall. Below this is what appears to be marble wainscoting. Polidori's photograph is particularly interesting for how it captures this intersection of preservation and history. The plastic sheeting, likely there to protect the artwork during renovation work, creates interesting visual effects as it ripples across the painting's surface. This modern intervention contrasts dramatically with the historical opulence of the space, creating a compelling dialogue between past and present. The wooden parquet flooring visible at the bottom of the frame adds another layer of historical authenticity to the scene. The composition includes partial views of other gilt-framed paintings on either side, suggesting this is part of a larger gallery space. This image is characteristic of Polidori's work documenting historic spaces, particularly his extensive documentation of Versailles, where he captures both the grandeur of the palace and the ongoing work to preserve it. Robert Polidori is a master of spatial aesthetics. His images seem quiet, yet an extraordinary power resides within them. Polidori is able to tell the story of mankind through architectural photography. He regards his subjects from a sober distance in order to find an emblematic moment and join the past and present into a single image. His photos have been shown in internationally renowned museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal, and the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin. In addition, there have been numerous publications on Polidori’s extensive work, including a three-volume illustrated book of photographs documenting the monumentality of the Palace of Versailles, Parcours Muséologique Revisité, which won the Liliane Bettencourt Prix de la Photographie. “When I point the camera at something, it is like asking a question. And the picture that emerges is like an answer.” Robert Polidori. PREISS FINE ARTS celebrates 15 years of successful collaborations with only the most esteemed photographers and collectors.
