About the Item

15 x 15 archival pigment print (image size 14 x 14 inches), edition 8. Signed, titled, dated and editioned on frame label provided. Framing also available at an additional cost. In the latest series by Simone Rosenbauer, entitled Like Ice in the Sunshine, the artist takes the happy simplicity of an ice pop in the sun to capture moments loved and lost, to dwell on ephemeral experiences, and to chart the strength – and frailty – of changing identities. Following an original series done in Sydney, Australia, in 2014, the artist was invited to continue the series via an artist's residency in Los Angeles in 2016. Leaving the natural sun to shape a mix of perennially loved “paddle pops” (as they are called in Australia, where the artist now lives), ice becomes liquid, pooling around the melting whole. Colors merge, others separate, some creep away from their host. Flaking, sloughing, gently seeping - each and every one tells a different tale. The pictures are themselves the visual essence of summer. In each work, a popsicle is centered on a different DayGlo colored background. The pictures are sugary pop confections that seduce with their heightened artificial color. All the components of commercial product photography are in place, but this ideal is literally dissolving before our eyes. With this one simple motif, Rosenbauer deftly evokes both the enticement and the elusiveness of summer. As bold and quintessentially summertime as these elegant images are, they nevertheless capture a melancholy reality: bitter or sweet, all memories eventually melt into the flow of life. Born in Germany in 1977, Rosenbauer received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees there at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Dortmund. Thereafter, she was granted the Europe Endeavor Award, from the Australian government, to pursue MFA studies in photography at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. She completed her studies there in 2010, and continues to live, work, and teach in the Sydney area. In 2011, her work was selected for participation in the reGeneration2 project, sponsored by the Musée de l’Elysée (Lausanne, Switzerland) and the Aperture Foundation (New York). Her work continues to be shown in many local and international venues.

He can do anything with a camera, but what he mostly does is capture real moments and transform them into visual poetry. His work continues to be an inspiration to me.” William Friedkin, Director of French Connection “Art Shay is one of our finest photographers. His work over the past fifty years has artfully captured the beauty, humor, and pathos of America.” Studs Terkel “Art Shay is one of the best photojournalists I know. I’ve been a fan of his work since the early 1950s - before the launch of playboy magazine.” Hugh Hefner “Algren, Terkel, Royko, they gave us a voice. Art Shay gave us a face.” Tony Fitzpatrick, Chicago Artist “Art Shay is America’s Cartier-Bresson.” Thomas Dyja, author of The Third Coast “Chicago’s Art Shay in many ways is to American photography what Nelson Algren was to American writing: that rare and absolutely necessary citizen who’s blessed with a cold eye, a clear head, and a warm heart...
