About the Item

Caitlin and Charlie (Chicks and Chicks) - 2017 50x49cm, Edition of 10 plus 2 Artist Proofs. Archival C-Print, based on the Polaroid. Signature label and Certificate. Artist inventory 19526. Not mounted. Consider the work of Stefanie Schneider not as a body of photographs, but as a cartography of impermanence — an archive of fugitive moments captured in a medium that is itself disintegrating. These are not simply images. They are time-wounded documents, infused with the sorrow of entropy and the poetry of chemical failure. They tremble. They vanish as you look. In Schneider’s universe, the desert is not a backdrop. It is a metaphysical condition — a place beyond civilization, where narrative begins to fracture under the sun, and where emotion exists in a slow, silent collapse. Her use of expired Polaroid film — with its inherent unpredictability and ghost-like distortions — becomes a philosophical act. The image is dying as it is born. There is a madness in this. And a kind of truth. Her figures are not characters but phantoms. They appear in the frame like survivors of something unnamed — perhaps a romance, perhaps a catastrophe. Perhaps the same thing. They do not perform. They linger. They haunt. Their gestures are interrupted, as if halfway through remembering something unbearable. In the tradition of the Wabi-sabi aesthetic, Schneider’s work honors what is broken, unfinished, and decaying — but without sentimentality. There is no comfort in these images, only the aching beauty of things that cannot last. One must ask: what kind of world do we inhabit, where even our dreams come to us already faded? Her work suggests we are trapped in a continuum where memory corrodes and time devours its children without ceremony. As you engage with Schneider’s photographs, resist the temptation to interpret them. Instead, listen. They speak in the frequency of ghosts — not loudly, but with a persistence that cannot be ignored.

ABOUT: Victoria Goldman’s twenty-year-long fascination with Tarot has created a series of photographs based on the imagery and the mythology behind the ancient Tarot cards. Each image in the collection is inspired by and named after one of the 22 major archetypes of the Tarot. While photographing and teaching yoga and meditation in India, Hawaii, and throughout Europe, Goldman always made sure to carry a Tarot deck in her backpack. She views Tarot as a tool for personal elevation, helping her direct her focus and better understand her psyche. The collection’s soft focus and figurative emphasis is reminiscent of the work of Francesca Woodman or Julia Margaret Cameron, whom Goldman cites as personal artistic inspirations. The concept behind the exhibition was long thought-out; while some pieces date as recently as two months prior to the exhibition opening, others date as far back as 1999 or 2000. Shot primarily with vintage Polaroid and film with a twin lens Rolleiflex camera, the dark, moody, mythological images recall a classical tone that mirrors the timelessness of the cards themselves. The invitational image, entitled “Wheel of Fortune”, depicts a young woman in a glittering gown, her backside facing the viewer and her body positioned to spin a large carnival wheel hidden in the darkness of the photograph. The high-contrast nature of the image abstracts the gown, morphing the glitter on the dress into drops of light that shine through the dark air. The slender young woman in “Fortune” can be found in several of the collection’s photographs, depicting not just Lady Luck, as in the invitational image, but also the Emperor, the Devil...
