About the Item

Ladybird (Chicks and Chicks and sometimes Cocks) - 2019 Edition of 10, 20x20cm, Archival C-Print, based on the Polaroid Artist inventory 22256. Signature label and Certificate. Not mounted. “Ichi-go ichi-e” is a Japanese proverb rooted in the awareness of impermanence. Literally translated as “one time, one meeting,” it reminds us that every encounter is singular — unrepeatable, even if it seems familiar. No moment will ever unfold in quite the same way again. The people, the feelings, the light — all of it is transient. All we can hold on to is the fragile beauty that emerges from its passing. The phrase dates back to the 16th century, spoken by the revered tea master Sen no Rikyuu, who taught that every meeting should be treated as though it were the first and last — a sacred, unrepeatable event. In the quiet mindfulness of the tea ceremony, this philosophy becomes a practice: to be fully present, to honor the impermanence of connection. This sensibility echoes deeply in the work of Stefanie Schneider. Her photographs are not just images — they are fleeting collisions of light, emotion, and chemical chance. Staged and surrendered in equal measure, her work honors the moment just as it begins to vanish. Like the tea ceremony, her process is steeped in attention and transience: expired Polaroid film, shifting desert light, strangers briefly embodying stories before they dissolve into memory. Each frame is a once-in-a-lifetime meeting. What we see will never exist again — not in the same way, not with the same soul. Her photographs ache with this truth. They are a gentle reminder, like ichi-go ichi-e, to cherish what is now — to recognize beauty not in permanence, but in its passing. In the blink of a shutter, she preserves the ephemeral. And in doing so, she teaches us to pay attention, to love harder, to feel deeper — because nothing lasts, and that is exactly what makes it precious.
