About the Item
We can imagine a coincidence thousands of years ago, the blink of an eye on cosmic time scales... In the Oort Cloud, an insignificant ball of dust and ice, its path disturbed once again, its orbit honed by the gravity of those far above its station, hurled toward the Sun, uncertain of its future... On Earth, in an in- hospitable corner of the White Mountains of California, a seedling bursting forth, a mere twig of the species pinus longaeva, equally uncertain of its destiny...
While one traverses the timeless emptiness of space and withstands the incessant pull of the Jovian planets, the other grows, is carved by the bitter winds into fantastical shapes, spreads its arms toward the heavens, and dies a glorious death, its own body the sarcophagus that will carry it unchanged millennia into the future...
Perihelion, for a comet, is as dangerous an affair as the flight of the mindless moth toward the open flame, or the close encounter on a dance floor with a woman so beautiful and so out of reach that every trace of sensation, of admiration, and of love is scorched away in an instant... But, once in a while, a sungrazing comet survives its close encounter and fills the skies of planet Earth with its brilliant light, flaunting its twin gowns of effervescence blown asunder by sunlight and by the solar wind.
In the White Mountains, the long-dead bristlecone pine, as timeless as the comet itself, awaits to greet another messenger from the far reaches of our Solar System. This may be the first naked eye comet in two or three decades, but to the bristlecone, patient as ever, it is one of many to have displayed their ephemeral beauty, a mere twinkle against the backdrop of unchanging stars rising to greet the long-lived witnesses to our history night after night, year after year, century after century...

Vahé Peroomian
Vahé Peroomian is a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Southern California. He received a Ph.D. in Physics from UCLA in 1994, specializing in space physics, and has carried out research in that field for the past 25 years. Vahé’s love of photography was sparked by a gift of a Kodak “toy” camera with a roll of 120 film when he was 10 years old, grew through the years and blossomed into a passion nearly two decades ago. Since then, he has taken every opportunity to pursue his fascination with photography and the beauty of the Gaian landscape. He is a self-trained photographer, and prefers a hands-on approach and independent experimentation with photographic styles and techniques. He has found that the same off-the-wall approach that works in solving physics problems helps him see landscapes in a new light as well. The self-similar shapes in landscapes, and the play between cloud and landscape that characterize many of his photographs are a manifestation of this viewpoint. Vahe has traveled far and wide during the last several decades, photographing many of the national parks in the western U.S., the kaleidoscopic landscapes of California, as well as the wonders of India, Singapore, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Croatia, . He has participated in numerous solo, group, and juried photography exhibitions, and has been a Nominee of the prestigious Black and White Spider Awards on five occasions, most recently in 2017 with two images, one of which also received Honorable Mention. He has also won first place in the Black and White Landscapes category at the 20th Annual Louisville Art Association Juried Photography Show, the Founder’s Choice Award at the 2011 Infinity Art Gallery exhibition, and is a four-time participant of PhotoSpiva, the longest running juried photography exhibition in the United States.

View AllMoon rise and the Milky Way
Located in La Canada Flintridge, CA
Photograph printed in Fuji Crytal Archive paper, size is 20"x30" in 24"x36" white archival mat and frame. Edition 1 of 5, signed by artist.
A number of elements came together in this photo, taken during a backpacking trip into the Ansel Adams Wilderness in the Eastern Sierra, California. Just as alpine peaks glow pink long before the sun crests the horizon, so too they blush when the Moon is about to make an appearance. With sufficiently dark skies, the moonlit glow of mountains stands in contrast with the Milky Way rising above the landscape, ephemeral light that is gone far too soon. This is an aluminum Metalprint, printed by infusing dyes directly into a specially coated aluminum sheet.

Title: Nuclear Fusion, Iceland
Location: Iceland
Edition: 1 of 5, signed by artist
Description: Nuclear fusion powers the Sun as its last rays reflect from the frozen lakes of Iceland. This was photographed as I was standing on the brittle ice of a frozen lake, wary of each footstep I took toward the setting Sun.

Title: South Tufa Swirls
Location: Mono Lake, California
Edition: 2 of 5, signed by artist
Description: The shoreline of the lake is never the same... The wind-whipped water forms swirling pools, deposits layers of fluffy froth on the shoreline, and can’t help but reflect the light show of sunset in its mirrored surface, whether the clouds that have gathered participate or not.
