Vicki McKenna
"Windswept, Mono Lake", Landscape, Aspen, Grove, Autumn, Color Photograph, 2013

2013

About the Item

Vicki McKenna's color photograph 'Windswept, Mono Lake' is an intimate landscape of an aspen grove along the top of a hill in late autumn, shot in California's spectacular Eastern Sierra. The high winds have removed the leaves, leaving only a few to form exclamation points of gold among the field of whites and greys of the massed trunks. Printed on archival paper with a matte finish, delivered in an acid-free white mat; image dimensions are 14 x 21 inches. The photograph is included in McKenna’s Form and Fabric portfolio. Signed, numbered, and dated. Limited edition of 10. As a geologist and teacher, Vicki McKenna started taking photographs to illustrate concepts to her students, but soon became intrigued by the challenges of representing a three-dimensional world with an engaging, two-dimensional image. While it is not surprising that McKenna is drawn to photograph the natural landscape, her interests are broad-ranging, and a fascination with architecture means she is also interested in the built environment. McKenna is represented by Fountain Street Gallery based in Boston, MA.

SEAL ROCKS WAVES #27 New South Wales 2012
By Jay Mark Johnson
Located in Santa Monica, CA
This large format, color-photograph belongs to Jay Mark Johnson's wave series - the images from which depict the rhythmic cycling and recycling of oceanfront waves as recorded on remote coastlines around the world--in Hawaii, Florida, California, the Caribbean, Great Britain, Australia and South Africa. These artworks belong to the artist’s ongoing inquiry into the possibilities for timeline photography. For this decades-long project Johnson employs an unconventional camera system to produce seamless delineated renderings of familiar events as they occur over time. The results present an altered view of our surroundings. Artworks from Johnson’s timeline series have been exhibited extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe. They can be found in the permanent collections of the Bundestag (German Parliament) in Berlin, the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie at Karlsruhe, the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, the Phoenix Art Museum, the Langen Foundation, Hombroich, Germany, the Peter Klein...

Moving to California in 1998, Schott's work has evolved to include the epic landscapes and deserts of the American West as well as architectural, conceptual and more formal environments from both home and his travels. Influenced by a number of photographic peers and precursors such as Candida Höfer, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Jeff Wall, Michael Wolf, Gregory Crewdson, William Eggleston and Joel Sternfeld, Schott's images successfully blend technical, conceptual and formal rigor with a decisive sense of composition and color. Schott's images have an iconic sensibility and give us a bird's eye view onto humanity and its constructs. The specific is edged towards the abstract, often revealing the compelling and disjunctive moment where nature meets man. Frank Schott was born in Cologne, Germany in 1962. He currently lives and works in San Francisco...
