David Levy
The Bath #1 - In Celebration of Pride Month

1995

About the Item

Stone and Press Gallery is excited to offer several works in celebration of the LGBTQ community. David Levy created this vintage silver gelatin photograph in 1995. The image was taken in New Orleans, LA but not printed or editioned until 2010. It is signed in pencil, titled and annotated 1995/2010 to indicate the date the picture was taken as well as the date the photograph was issued. It is also numbered #2 out of an edition of just 10, all on verso. Levy was working for Stone and Press Gallery on Julia Street at the time he shot this image of a fellow photographer posing in the un-remodeled section of one of the thirteen side-hall row houses on Julia Street between St. Charles Avenue and Camp Street, popularly known as Julia Row of the Thirteen Sisters. They were built in 1832-33 as a speculative development. Upon its completion, Julia Row became one of the most affluent addresses in the American Sector. Each three-story house with attic and three-story service wing was a single-family residence that architect Alexander Thompson Wood designed in a transitional Federal to Greek Revival style. Danish-American photographer, David Levy was born in Landsthul, Germany in 1962. At ten, his father took him to “The Studio”, which was owned by family friend and accomplished photographer, Harvey Mendelson. This was the start of David’s life-long passion for photography. While studying communications and art history at college, he met Jerry Burchfield and Mark Chamberlain, the owners of BC Space Gallery in Laguna Beach, CA. As a lab assistant working side by side with Jerry in the darkroom, he began to refine his technical skills with color and black & white printing. Considered a master printer utilizing traditional and alternative processes, and the demanding Ilfochrome process, David quickly built a reputation which has led to collaborations with numerous artists around the world to produce exhibition quality prints. Influenced by classic and contemporary photographers, filmmakers and artists, David’s conceptual photography reflects an integral connection between environmentalism, social/political activism and mass media influence on social behavior. Recent work deals with issues of racism, perception of “place” in society, and the influence of mass media on lifestyle. Levy’s work has been exhibited extensively in the United States and Europe and is held by numerous private and corporate collections. Commercially, he produces creative and editorial imagery for Lifestyle, Portraits, Travel and Product use. David has also produced and curated numerous exhibitions including works by William Eggelston, Mark Chamberlain, Jerry Burchfield, Glen Perotto, Jose Vasquez, Nils Olav Boe and many other notable photographic artists. He has also served as the Country Manager for Getty Images in Denmark and has curated a number of commercial exhibitions for Getty as part of the Copenhagen Photo Festival.

Brandenburg 2013 - In Celebration of Pride Month
By Daniel Kane
Located in New Orleans, LA
Stone and Press Gallery is excited to offer several works in celebration of the LGBTQ community. In the famous story of the great 19th century photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, it is said she was given her first camera by her daughter as a way to occupy her time while her husband was away. In my case, as with so many others, the beginning of the story was equally fortuitous: Knowing I was about to spend a year abroad as an exchange student, my mother gave me my first camera, saying I would probably want to take pictures while I was away. Neither of us realized how important that little Instamatic camera would turn out to be, and now, 47 years and over a hundred thousand images later, I present the different portfolios shown here as a reflection of the work I have made since back then in 1970. One by one, my favorite films and papers have been driven from the market by digital media, but I remain loyal to this day to analog photography, and the originals of all of these images were made with real film, either color slides...
