David Yarrow describes his creative process as follows: "How close can a prime lens really get? For me, working with a 35mm wide-angle lens, the limit is usually around 3 feet. As a rule of thumb, I’ve found that the minimum working distance in feet is often about one-tenth to one-fifteenth of the lens's focal length in millimetres—while the maximum should be roughly double that. So, I’d rarely use an 85mm lens at under 6 feet, nor a 35mm lens much beyond that range. But when you can shoot from as close as 1.5 feet without resorting to a fisheye, the 20mm becomes a game changer. The Nikon 20mm f/1.4, for instance, excels at this—offering rich environmental context, pleasing bokeh, and tack-sharp portrait detail. If that all sounds a bit technical, forgive me—but photography is inseparable from mathematics. It's not just emotion and instinct. Ansel Adams, after all, was a mathematician long before he was a visual poet. Serious photographers need to understand not just light, but the geometry of lenses. When we posted “The Hunger Games” on social media, it quickly became our most loved image. Some viewers praised my bravery—or questioned my sanity—but they missed the point. The image is built on access, experience, and math. It wasn’t a reckless gamble. Like “The Revenant,” much of which was shot by Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki using similar proximity principles, this was about precision, not luck. The story: I was inside a custom-built cage in Transvaal, South Africa. A stunning lioness emerged from the tall grass and was immediately curious—drawn by my scent. She approached the small shooting slot in the cage, just inches away. She couldn’t reach me, but her proximity made for an unparalleled opportunity—a wild portrait of a lioness as intimate as any fashion photograph taken by fellow Scotsman Albert Watson in New York. Her nose was too close to be sharp—depth of field collapses at that range—but the rest of her face rendered with extraordinary detail. I’m proud of this image. It’s not just about courage. It’s about understanding how to get close—mathematically, compositionally, emotionally." David Yarrow is a British fine art photographer and one of the world's most spectacular and best-selling nature photographers. Visual storytelling is his craft, and large-format monochrome prints are his medium. Through elaborately staged settings, Yarrow conjures the magic of the great American history, from the Wild West to Route 66. In his wildlife photography, he captures the planet's beauty. Majestic lions, sleek panthers, and free-roaming buffalo populate his works, trumped only by the female bombshells Yarrow places beside them. While highlighting the untamed side of supermodels such as Cara Delevingne or Cindy Crawford, Yarrow portrays the wild beasts in the most human way possible. Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "How close can a prime lens go to the subject? My limit would normally be working from 3ft with a 35m wide angle. In my experience, a good rule of thumb is that the minimum focal distance in feet should – in 75% of circumstances – be a tenth to a fifteenth of the numerical lens specification and then the maximum should be double that. For instance, I would not normally tend to use a 85m lens at a range of 6ft or less and equally why use a 35m at more than 6ft? So if there is the possibility of exploring focal distance at 1.5ft without a fisheye lens, the 20m lens has a chance and the Nikon 20m F1.4m is an outstanding lens. It gives contextual detail with comfortable “bokey” and it gives portrait detail with eye grabbing clarity. If that is all a bit technical, I apologise but photography is rarely not about maths. Of course it is about emotional employment and personal soul, but Ansel Adams was a mathematician first. Practitioners should understand how light enters the camera and also how lenses work. On social media, “The Hunger Games...
