About the Item

Wise Guys, a group of penguins walking towards the Camera, looking like a gang, black and white photography, photographed by David Yarrow. All prints are limited edition. Available in multiple sizes. High-end framing on request. All prints are done and signed by the artist. The collector receives an additional certificate of authenticity from the gallery. David Yarrow explains his creative process as follows: "I took this photograph early in a trip to South Georgia, and I keep coming back to it. There's something about the character and clarity of the moment—the main players are pin-sharp, and there's a charisma to the composition. Penguins photographed head-on offer a fresh and often underused perspective, and by shooting from ground level, I was able to give them a sense of stature and attitude. That day, depth of field was almost non-existent, and most of my frames felt cluttered or chaotic—except this one. Here, the penguins move with purpose. They look like a tight-knit crew, and there’s even a touch of menace to their collective swagger. The bird on the right could have watched a few Joe Pesci scenes: “You think I’m funny?” They’re the wise guys of the beach, no doubt. I’ve always been drawn to mobster films—Goodfellas, The Untouchables, The Road to Perdition, The Departed—and maybe that’s part of why this image resonates. It’s amusing to think that South Georgia, one of the most remote places on Earth, could conjure memories of the South Side of Chicago. But somehow, this photograph connects the two in my visual imagination. There’s a bit of a paradox when it comes to photographing penguins. Despite living at the bottom of the world, they’re heavily documented, and to many viewers, they lack the individuality or dominance of alpha predators. The creative challenge is always the same: to find something authentic and fresh. Sometimes poor weather helps. In this case, it was humor. And as any photographer who’s worked on these beaches will tell you, if you return to the ship smelling clean and wearing Tom Ford, you haven’t really done the job. Commitment comes scented with penguin poop." David Yarrow is a British fine art photographer and one of the world's most spectacular and best-selling nature photographers. Visual storytelling is his craft, and large-format monochrome prints are his medium. Through elaborately staged settings, Yarrow conjures the magic of the great American history, from the Wild West to Route 66. In his wildlife photography, he captures the planet's beauty. Majestic lions, sleek panthers, and free-roaming buffalo populate his works, trumped only by the female bombshells Yarrow places beside them. While highlighting the untamed side of supermodels such as Cara Delevingne or Cindy Crawford, Yarrow portrays the wild beasts in the most human way possible. "I took this early on in the trip and I kept referring back to it because it has character and the lead players are pin sharp. Penguins head on offer a different perspective and a ground position - as always - adds stature to the subject. There was no depth of field available that day and the vast majority of the images were cluttered and messy – except, thankfully, this one. They look a cohesive unit and there is a touch of menace to their swagger. They are clearly the wise guys...
