About the Item

In this vintage silver gelatin photograph, Dianora Niccolini creates a sensual portrait of a young nude man rising out of the surf with outstretched arms. The photo suggests a spirit of renewal, an awakening. Niccolini used a poem by Walt Whitman as part of her inspiration: I sing the body electric, The armies of those I love engirth me and I engirth them, They will not let me off till I go with them, respond to them, And discorrupt them, and charge them full with the charge of the soul. Was it doubted that those who corrupt their own bodies conceal themselves? And if those who defile the living are as bad as they who defile the dead? And if the body does not do fully as much as the soul? And if the body were not the soul, what is the soul? Niccolini was a pioneer as a woman photographer who used the nude male figure as her subject matter. She depicted the nude black male as art long before Robert Mapplethorpe. Dianora Niccolini was born in Florence, Italy, to an American mother and a father from an old Florentine family. She lived in Florence throughout the second world war, and at the age of almost nine years old, she came to the United States. When she turned 18, she left home and went to New York City to study art. She met a group of dancers and her passion, in her late teens and early twenties, was ballet. After she met Weegee in 1963, she took up photography and since then her professional career and focus have been photography. In 1973, she began to create photographic bodies of work which resulted in exhibits. Her first photographic exhibit was in 1974. It was a serious study of the female nude. Her second exhibit was in 1975. It was a study of the male nude which was favorably reviewed by Gene Thornton in The Sunday New York Times of December 7, 1975. One of her first male models was an African-American body builder. Photographs of him have been included in many photographic anthologies and were also widely exhibited in the mid seventies and pre-dated Mapplethorpe's images of body builders by several years. Niccolini's male nude images have definitely influenced many photographers. She is considered to be one of the female pioneers of the male nude in photography. She continues to photograph the male nude, and 15 of her photographs, as well as the cover, were included in the book, THE MALE NUDE, by David Leddick and published by Taschen in 1998. Leddick's most recent book, MEN IN THE SUN, published by Universe/Rizzoli in 1999, also includes several of her photographs including the front and back covers. Niccolini’s creative venue is primarily photography, but she paints as well. In 1977, she exhibited the Mona Lisa Recycled series (mixed media) in which she combined her painting skills with her photography. These images were hand generated, not computer generated. They pre-dated computer generated art by several years. Niccolini prides herself on exploring and stretching artistic boundaries. She believes that art is an open-ended experience with infinite possibilities. She attributes her love of art and creative daring to her Florentine upbringing. Her 20 years of experience as a medical photographer contributed as well to her love of the perfect form. Niccolini has had two photographic books published WOMEN OF VISION, Unicorn Publishers-1982, and MEN IN FOCUS - Morgan & Morgan, in 1983). Two more books are pending. Dianora Niccolini was the first president of THE PROFESSIONAL WOMEN PHOTOGRAPHERS, serving from 1979 to 1984. Under her leadership, PWP became recognized as a leading professional organization for women photographers. She has taught photography at the Germain School of Photography, The New York Institute of Photography, The New York Institute of Technology and at The Learning Annex.

In the famous story of the great 19th century photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, it is said she was given her first camera by her daughter as a way to occupy her time while her husband was away. In my case, as with so many others, the beginning of the story was equally fortuitous: Knowing I was about to spend a year abroad as an exchange student, my mother gave me my first camera, saying I would probably want to take pictures while I was away. Eric Kellerman created this sensual nude photograph of a young nude woman with a large zinc vessel under her arm. It is pencil signed, titled and numbered 1 from an edition of 20. The photographer has stamped a red monogram next to his signature. Eric Kellerman is a Briton who has lived near Nijmegen in the Netherlands for just over half his life. In 2008, he retired from academic life to spend more time on photography. Kellerman works almost entirely in the studio and uses digital equipment from camera to print, although image manipulation is limited to darkroom-like processes. Specializing in the nude, he has a regular team of female collaborators, most of whom have a serious interest in movement (dance, drama therapy, athletics, martial arts). Kellerman used to consider his work to be distant, abstract, melancholic, ‘unerotic’, despite its subject matter. Now he's not so sure. He emphasizes line, geometrical form, texture, implicit movement, and above all, chiaroscuro. He likes to create ambiguity in his photos, so that the viewer is sometimes unsure what part of the body is being looked at.
