Patty Carroll
Patty Carroll is an American photographer who has taught and practiced photography since the 1970s. Her images are characterized as vivid and boldly colored. Where her earlier works include typologies and portraiture, her new work symbolically expresses the domestic roles of women via the series “Invisible Women.” Carroll earned a bachelor of fine arts in graphic design from the University of Illinois and, in 1972, she graduated with a master of science in photography from the Institute of Design at IIT, Chicago.
Since receiving her MS in photography, Carroll has been teaching photography at universities worldwide. She has been a professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College and the Royal College of Art in London, among other schools. Carroll’s photography has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, the Art Institute in Chicago, White Box Museum in Beijing, and the Photographers Association in Ningbo, China.
Carroll’s work has received many merits, publications and grants. In 2014, she was listed in Photolucida’s “Top 50” after her most recent series, “Anonymous Women.” The series became a published book by Daylight Books in 2016. This is the latest of her five photographic books. Carroll’s work has also been published worldwide by organizations like the Huffington Post, Dallas Morning News and the British Journal of Photography. In 2003, the Illinois Arts Council awarded her the Artist Fellowship Grant for her work.

- More By-Ways, Acrylic, Texas Artist. Contemporary Art, Abstract Art,Women ArtistBy Cheryl McClureLocated in Houston, TXMore By-Ways is painted on a wooden panel so there is no need for a frame. It is acrylic on panel. The sides are finished. SEE ARTIST BIO To make my paintings I have come to the realization that I use what I call the ‘Three I’s” of INFLUENCES, INTUITION. and INTENT. If I only used influences, I would consider my work not much more than a mimetic copy or totally derivative of someone else’s work. If I only used intuition, I would wonder (and rightly so) if I left too much to chance or mood. It is important to have a consistency of quality and meaning in my work. If I used only intent, I would more than likely be disappointed because my imagined intent is always elusive. I get more than I imagined by not setting too many rules about how to get there. Using all of these factors, I can use the knowledge of formal issues that comes from viewing a lot of art and, also, from being in the studio making art all of the time. Using that comprehension of formal design as an aid to intuitively know what is the right relationship of color, mark, space, etc. is the intent. Intention is necessary to direct you to explore the former two. Intention also demands you delve more into your own reasons for making art. 2020 University of Texas, College of Pharmacy Partnership Exhibit, Tyler, TX Beauty of Art and Medicine IV, Rogers Nursing and Health Sciences Building, Tyler Junior College, Tyler, TX Stable, Cerulean Gallery, Dallas, TX 2019 Mississippi Art Colony Fall Travel Show, juror, Stanley Kurth Small Works, Gallery Mack, Seattle, WA 2017 Black Tie (optional), Invitational, Adam Peck Gallery, Provincetown, Mass.
