Cy Twombly gained fame for his art that combined cultural, historical, and poetic elements—particularly those from classical antiquity—with abstract shapes and his distinctive script. Born Edwin Parker Twombly, Jr. on April 25, 1928, in Lexington, Virginia, he began his artistic journey under the guidance of Pierre Daura and Marion Junkin at Washington and Lee University. This initial training was complemented by his formative experiences at the Arts Students League of New York and Black Mountain College, where he established enduring friendships with influential figures like Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, and Merce Cunningham.
A pivotal moment for Twombly was his 1952 trip to Italy and North Africa with Rauschenberg, funded by a grant from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. This journey allowed Twombly to engage deeply with the rich cultural history that would inform his future artistic endeavors, leading to the creation of significant early pieces.
Twombly made his way back to Italy in 1957 and 1958, during which he presented his first solo exhibition in Italy at Galleria La Tartaruga, owned by Plinio De Martiis. In 1959, he married Luisa Tatiana...

Ferreras Green Velvet with Dalmatian, Vienna, 1956 – Miguel Ferreras' lustrous velvet suit was photographed with a Dalmation in the doorway of Vienna's Hotel Bristol for the August 13, 1956 issue of LIFE. The Dalmatian's history is as numerous and varied as its spots. The breed originated in Croatia but quickly found its way to Europe, especially England; it has been a bird dog, a trail hound, a retriever, and a hunter of both large and small game. The Dalmation's most recent and best known talent has been as a carriage dog; running in front of the horse drawn carriages of the elite and fire brigades alike, paving the way and guarding for danger. This talent, along with it's flexible temperament, lead to its continued use in Fire Companies to this day. The Dalmatian is emblematic of service in moments of emergency. Model with Siamese Cat -- Mark Shaw photographed model Alice Bruno for Mademoiselle in 1950 holding a Siamese kitten -- A favorite model of Shaw's, Alice Bruno also appeared on one of his 1951 LIFE covers. The Siamese cat is renowned as extremely vocal, intelligent, and affectionate and is typically very social and exhibits a love of human and feline companionship. The first Siamese cats outside their Asian home of Siam, now Thailand, were sent as gifts in the late 1880's by the British consul-General and the American consul in Bangkok. Image size is 16" x 16" (for 17" x 22" paper size). All Mark Shaw prints are made to order in limited editions on Hahnemuhle photo rag paper. Each print is Estate stamped on the back and signed and numbered by David Shaw, and accompanied by a letter of authenticity. Possibly Bert Hardy's most famous image.
Two boys in the Gorbals area of Glasgow.
The Gorbals tenements were built quickly and cheaply in the 1840s, providing housing for Glasgow's burgeoning population of industrial workers.
Conditions were appalling; overcrowding was standard and sewage and water facilities inadequate.
The tenements housed about 40,000 people with up to eight family members sharing a single room,
30 residents sharing a toilet and 40 sharing a tap.
By the time this photograph was taken 850 tenements had been demolished since 1920.
Redevelopment of the area began in the late 1950s and the tenements were replaced with a modern tower block complex in the sixties. Original Publication: Picture Post - 4499 - The Forgotten Gorbals - pub. 1948

Bert Hardy Albert William Thomas Hardy (19 May 1913 – 3 July 1995)
was an English documentary and press photographer
known for his work published in the Picture Post magazine between 1941 and 1957.
Life and work Born in Blackfriars, Bert Hardy rose from humble working class origins in Southwark, London.
The eldest of seven children, he left school at age 14 to work for a chemist who also processed photos.
His first big sale came in 1936 when he photographed King George V and Queen Mary in a passing carriage during the Silver Jubilee celebrations, and sold 200 small prints of his best view of the King.
His first assignment, at age 23, was to photograph Hungarian actor Sakall at the Mayfair Hotel.
Hardy freelanced for The Bicycle magazine, and bought his first small-format 35 mm Leica.
He signed on with the General Photographic Agency as a Leica photographer,
later founding his own freelance firm, Criterion.

Picture Post and World War II In 1941,
Hardy was recruited by the then editor Tom Hopkinson of the leading picture publication of the 1930s to the 1950s, Picture Post.
Founded in 1938 and funded by publisher Edward Hulton, the magazine's first editor was Hungarian émigré Stefan Lorant (1901–97) assisted by Hopkinson, who took over as editor from 1940. The picture-centric, left-leaning and reasonably-priced publication was highly successful and circulation soon rose to over a million.
