About the Item

PHOBIAS Pezdek’s PHOBIAS expose the absurdist, fearful tendencies from which we all suffer. Concurrently, there is a powerfully implicit optimism running through each work which is conveyed by elegantly mannered elements of form. Pezdek’s images are allegorical expressions of specific and unusual phobias such as the fear of paper and the fear of being tied up. She creates a voyeuristic quality of witnessing someone’s deepest anxieties which are tangibly exposed in contorted postures and literally overtaken by objects. Distilled down to their essence, these phobias are not simply the insane products of one person’s bizarre imagination; more profoundly, they represent a perverseness universal to humankind, primal fear. The muted tones of Pezdek’s images express the effects fear has on the human condition. Lacking as the subjects are in a robustness of life, we observe how giving into baseness reduces us and imprisons us. We become slaves to our fears. To be confronted by one who is phobic and paralyzed by a bunch of balloons, for instance, it is plain to see the ridiculous power we allow fear to wield over ourselves. Pezdek’s sober palette also adds a clinical feel to the imagery and offers the viewer a rational approach to the irrational. Through confrontation of fear, Pezdek’s magnificently artful version of Exposure Therapy, it is possible to overcome these manufactured and self-imposed obstacles. Gazing upon another, we see ourselves. In recognition, there is beauty. SARAH PEZDEK The heart of Pezdek’s work lies within the investigation of various enigmas within the human condition as an abstract exploration of its intricacies and idiosyncrasies. Relying on empirical truths and experience of the observed world, Pezdek unveils the psychological aspects of perception in order to ignite a dialog with the audience. Whether that conversation be internal or external, it is an invitation to interrogate our conditioning. Pezdek’s work is a projection of various connections, barriers, beauty and psychology to better understand how the lives we live are directly affected by our personal states of consciousness and awareness. Though Pezdek considers herself a nature photographer, it is not environment specifically that interests her, but rather human nature and our place within that environment. “We as humans tend to believe that we are masters over nature, taking and destroying under the guise of forward progression as a species. Yet, this behavior is hypocritical as we have yet to even master ourselves. Our conditioning limits our experience and growth. I am curious about what happens if we break free from those confines and tap into what is outside that periphery. What is it about our thought processes, our influences, our environment, culture and society that drives us or hinders us? How do we shape our environment based on these elements, both external and internal? How do we break free from these confines and conditions? By doing so, how does that elevate us and are we capable of this, and sustaining our existence at a higher level of consciousness and mindfulness?” This is what fascinates Pezdek the most as an artist, and the realm of perception she continuously explores in her work. Sarah Pezdek is an award winning and internationally published photographer and artist residing in Upstate NY. Starting off her photography career in 2007, her work focuses on fine art, editorial portraiture and fashion and has had work published in print and online with publications such as American Art Collector, OUT Magazine, Cosmopolitan, and Glamour.

"OTHER 01" Black & White Photography 48" x 48" in Ed. of 10 by Giuliano Bekor Archival pigment print Not framed. Ships in tube. Men's - Other Series Intro This series connecting us to nature’s raw materials to create a piece that is organic and pure We put on the mask and the headdress not to hide but to reveal ourselves, to give ourselves the freedom to break with taboo, to transgress, to transform. Referencing ritual and native practices, this collection pays homage to an identity built by reaching into the Other and imbibing cross-cultural forms of self-expression. ABOUT THE ARTIST Internationally recognized photographer, Giuliano Bekor, holds a portfolio that includes work from the realms of fashion, beauty, celebrity, advertising, and fine art. Giuliano’s photography has been featured in top publications around the globe, and his client list includes an endless file of beauty industry leaders, advertising agencies, celebrities, producers, and artists. With 30 years in the industry, Giuliano has perfected his craft to an exceptional level of expertise. Composed of light, color, space and form, Giuliano brings ideas conceptualized in his own imagination into reality throughout his work. Currently living between New York and Los Angeles, Giuliano is often on the move traveling for work and inspiration. Always the restless visionary, he ceases to continually express his fresh and nuanced style. For Giuliano Bekor, a photograph is an image that comes into being consciously, composed of light, color, space and form. Like a painter, he sketches, refining ideas through pen and pencil well before the shutter clicks. A camera is strictly a means to an end, a way of making a palpable visual record of an idea that gestates in his mind, gains shape by his hand, and resolves through his eye as it peers through the lens. His subject is the human body, almost always nude. These images delve into the splendor of the body - how it can express the inner meaning of who we are. Limbs, torsos, muscles and bones are exposed as though carved out of a supple, glowing stone that flexes and twists. Many of these photographs feature subjects posed with the eyes obscured, the face covered. If we look closely, Bekor says, we can see that the body is as much a window into the soul as the eyes. This is a gallery of the soul etched into the forms we assume in the physical world. Through exaggerated contrast between light and dark, smooth and textured, vaporous and tactile, Giuliano deliberately filters the extraneous. The camera captures the image, but for Bekor each exposure is a transformation - of himself, his subjects, and us. He is digging into uneasy turf, fraught with tension: masculine/feminine, heroic/cowardly, shameless/shameful, eternal/fleeting. The intensity of detail, the fiercely exquisite perfection of the bodies themselves, the unflinching, scrupulous engagement of the lens, negates all pretense of politeness. Confronted, we are summoned to look. So we must. And we do. And we experience the beautiful human forms we inhabit and the silent, eloquent language they speak. EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS Giuliano Bekor’s most recent fine art photography solo shows include: 2019 - March Lips The cool HeArt...
