« J’ai compté : je suis allé 17 fois aux USA. « Seventeen trips ». Mes référents "culturels" et "politiques" ont évolué. D’autres images sont venus se superposer à celles qui remplissaient mon imaginaire. Mais tous s’est passé comme je le pressentais. Que reste-t- il à photographier aux USA ? Rien ? La route qui les relie recouvre en partie le tracé du fameux Pony Express, ce service de distribution du courrier qui fut en service entre 1860 et 1861. De nombreux westerns racontent l‘épopée de ce voyage à haut risque qui traversait les grandes plaines de l’Ouest, les Rocheuses et les réserves indiennes. Aujourd’hui, on arrive à Eureka (Nevada) par la route US 50, une route de 4800 km appelée « The Loneliest Road in America » (La Route La Plus Solitaire d’Amérique ). This photograph is from a series entitled, “(UN)THINKABLE,” the culmination of 25 years of Phillip Buehler’s work photographing remnants of the Cold War throughout the United States and Europe. Buehler has visited NATO airbases, Cape Canaveral, the Airplane Graveyard, missile bunkers and silos (even within New York City’s borders) among many other sites that are historic, and yet hidden, forbidden, and forgotten. Photographs from this series will be featured in a solo exhibition this September at the Front Room Gallery.
For anyone growing up during the Cold War the sense of dread of the world’s annihilation was all to concrete. It was evidenced in films like “Dr. Strangelove” and “The Day After.” Everyone knew the U.S. had enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world 5 times over, and assumed something similar about the Russians. For those not old enough to remember this built in fear, don’t worry (worry) it is reawakening. We don’t need another Cuban Missile Crisis to push us to the brink, the renewed tension with the Russians, and now North Korea’s recent entry in the nuclear weapons club is more than enough to unnerve anyone who is watching these conflicts unfold. Phillip Buehler is watching closely. Through this comprehensive series Buehler’s photos show many aspects of this non-war war. In Buehler’s aerial photographs from a military airplane storage yard in Arizona the repetition of the same model of bomber aircraft are so abstractly pattern-based that the overall effect beginnings to feel like a Middle Eastern tapestry...

A wonderful contemporary artwork by a noted Long Island photographer Holly Gordon.
For more than two decades Gordon has pushed through the traditional boundaries of photography. She is one of the pioneers of “photo-liminalism,” a process of achieving painterly quality in photography by overlapping, layering, and manipulating. As painters paint with a brush, Gordon’s brush is the lens of the camera and her computer. The digital world that Gordon works with provides endless opportunities. The evolution of images in her practice is limitless and bountiful.
Another highlight of Gordon’s recent career is her collaboration with Ward Hooper, a noted illustrator and painter from Long Island. The result of this collaboration is a book called “Parallel Perspectives : The Brush/ Lens Collaboration,” with a forward by Peter Pitzele, Ph.D., a teacher and author, and a preface by Denise A. Bibro, Director of Denise Bibro Fine Art, NYC. This collaboration continues a long tradition of Long Island coupled artists creating and experiencing art using Long Island as an incubator for creativity. One particular Long Island partnership that inspired Holly and Ward was of renowned twentieth century artist, Arthur Dove, and his wife, painter Hellen Torr. Other couples of artists connected to Long Island such as Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock and Elaine and Willem de Kooning were also inspirational for the two. These pairings were a testament of the richness of place and history of Long Island that should always be remembered and celebrated.
Holly Gordon’s work has been exhibited widely in such institutions as Denise Bibro Fine Art, NYC, American Museum of Natural History, NYC, New York Hall of Science, NYC, The Heckscher Museum of Art, NY, Southampton Arts Center, NY, The Long Island Museum, NY, Islip Art Museum, NY, to name a few. Steve Schlackman is a lawyer by profession and a photographer by choice. Fascinated by the magical world of photography since his youth, he honed this skill over time, meticulously pouring over all things photographic, technical and creative alike, with unstoppable enthusiasm. Steve’s passion for taking photographs was ignited early on, during a study-abroad trip to Paris, where he immersed himself in all things art historical. Diligence, a strong trait Schlackman is known for, paid off, and after daily meanderings at the Louvre, a great love for art emerged along with hundreds of photographs. These pictures proved to be early tributes to the urban landscape, and although they didn’t amount to full-on series, a seed was planted.
The omnipresent tension between the poor neighborhoods of the Cuban capital, as a result of political dictatorship, and the rich Afro-Cuban cultural roots of their inhabitants, whose wealth is represented by their music and feelings, is physically visible in Steve’s use of high contrast, a metaphoric touch on the subject of the light and darkness of the Afro-Cuban heritage. Although intentionally apolitical, the pictures speak volumes about the Cuban status quo and, appropriately, the eternal joy of living despite socio-political hardship.
