Joshua Lutz is an American artist working with large-format photography and video. Lutz was given his first solo exhibition at Gitterman Gallery during the summer of 2004. In 2008, Lutz’s first book, “Meadowlands,” was published with powerHouse Books. In essayist Robert Sullivan’s introduction to the monograph, he describes the Meadowlands as “. . .that giant swath of swamp and space that separates New Jersey from New York City, or, put another way, from New York City and the rest of the United States of America.” “The New Yorker” wrote: “Joshua Lutz takes the New Topographics of Adams, Shore, and Sternfeld into its current era of urban sprawl.” In the fall of 2008, Lutz had a solo exhibition for the “Meadowlands” series at ClampArt in New York City. 2013 saw the release of Lutz’s second book, “Hesitating Beauty.” A series of photographs revealing a different side of Lutz’s work—this body of work tells an extremely personal story of his mother. The book’s narrative carefully and thoughtfully encompasses the generally sensitive topic of mental illness. An exhibition of the work was mounted at ClampArt in New York City to coincide with the release of the monograph from Schilt Publishing.

The Good Dishes integrates memory, legacy, and metaphor with my response to loss. As I witnessed an early generation of family members pass, my cousins and I were each faced with the emotional task of cleaning out the family home. Sorting through the heirlooms, we would determine which items to toss, sell, or preserve. Without fail, when it came to the family’s fine china, that item was always given to the person who most cherished its memory and sentimental value.

Lives in New York City. NY
JP Terlizzi (American, b.1962) is a New York City photographer whose contemporary practice explores themes of memory, relationship, and identity. His images are rooted in the personal and heavily influenced around the notion of home, legacy, and family. He is curious how the past relates and intersects with the present and how the present enlivens the past, shaping one’s identity.
Born and raised in the farmlands of Central New Jersey, JP earned a BFA in Communication Design at Kutztown University of PA with a background in graphic design and advertising. He has studied photography at both the International Center of Photography in New York and Maine Media College in Rockport, ME.
His work has been exhibited widely in galleries including shows at The Center for Fine Art Photography, Vicki Myhren Gallery at the University of Denver, The Griffin Museum, Tilt Gallery, Panopticon Gallery, Candela Gallery, The Los Angeles Center of Photography, University Gallery at Cal Poly, Sohn Fine Art in Lenox, MA, and The Berlin Foto Biennale, Berlin, Germany, among others.
