About the Item

New York: Alfred Stieglitz, 1911. Halftone engraving from a gum bichromate print; 8 x 5 5/8 inches (203 x 142 mm), tipped onto a mounting sheet 8 x 11 3/4 in. 2 mm tear on lower right edge of photograph. A beautiful image of boys playing with toy sail boats by the German-Austrian photography pioneer Carl Christian Heinrich Kühn (1866 – 1944). A copy can be found in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Kühn is regarded as one of the forefathers of fine art photography, helping to establish photography as a full-fledged and independent form of art. He was part of the pictorialist photographic movement, and his works are appreciated for their frequent use of soft lighting and focus, leading some to draw parallels to impressionist painting. Kühn mainly used the gum bichromate technique which he perfected. By applying several layers he could produce a wide range of color tonalities. In 1911, he invented the Gummigravüre technique, a combination of photogravure and Gum bichromate. In 1915 he developed the Leimdruck technique, which uses Animal glue as Colloid and produces pictures similar to gum prints. He also invented the Syngraphie, a forgotten technique that uses two negatives of different sensitivity to obtain a larger tonal spectrum. Condition: Near fine.
