Mitchell Funk
Big Blue Waves Ocean District San Francisco - Visual White Noise

1997

About the Item

Can a photograph reduce stress and anxiety? Photographer Mitchell Funk says yes with his high-angle shot that harmoniously unifies sea and land. A pleasing relationship is created as the horizontal pattern of waves are continued in the horizontal grid of seaside houses. The image seems in constant flux as one pattern merges into another. Moreover, the image produces a meditative and spiritual effect. Breaking waves on the beach and their proxies on land create a calming visual white noise that relaxes the eye and mind. The interplay of patterns and colors makes this more than a location photograph. The work is a masterfully constructed statement of precise design, color, and composition. Signed, dated, numbered, 3/15 lower right, another size available. Unframed, printed later Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of " Color Photography" In 1970 he participated in one the first " Color Photography" shows at a major museum. The subjects for his striking and captivating visuals are typically set in the most ordinary environments, drawing the viewer into a charged but serene experience based on composition, palette and formal lines. Saturated in color, the nominal subjects gather a haunting and mesmerizing quality, creating a poignant pretext for the making of a formal color photograph. Decisively capturing the traces left by humanity, Pawassar's images are filled with a sense of universal nostalgia and pay homage to the passage of time and the extinguished moment, referencing documentary and street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastian Salgado...
