About the Item
Since 1969, Mitchell Funk has been a Minimalist Photographer. His signature style focuses on reducing pictorial elements to their essentials. In this recent image, shot in 2023, he continues the tradition but takes it to a new level. Funk captures a magic moment of a flock of alternating dark and light-colored pigeons in flight. He frames the shot as if it were a painting by Kenneth Noland or Ellsworth Kelly - where the ultra-simple composition is divided down the center with a large flat area in white on one side and a flat dark blue area on the other. An all-over pattern of flying birds populates the image like an artist's brush strokes in white and blue. "Birds in Flight over Manhattan" provides the truest expression of Funk's sensibility as an artist developing for over five decades.

Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of color photography. In 1970, he participated in one of the first color photography shows at the Brooklyn Museum titled “Images en Couleur." In 1971, he was included in the visionary books Frontiers of Photography and Color (Life Library of Photography), both published by Time-Life. He has done more than 50 photography magazine covers, including covers for Newsweek and Life.
