About the Item
This unexpected bird portrait was a grab shot as street photographer Mitchell Funk was entering the New York City subway. The real charm of the image is that it's more of an abstract statement of design and color interaction than a simple bird picture. All elements are centered and frontal but the bird's head turns to the right which makes the composition and turns the image into something more than just a bird pic. The out-of-focus colors in the background cradle the bird in place and makes him graphically pop and calls attention to the juxtaposition of natural and orgain shapes. Signed and dated on the lower right, numbered on verso, 4/15 Printed later, other size available, unframed, Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper

Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of color photography. In 1970, he participated in one of the first color photography shows at the Brooklyn Museum titled “Images en Couleur." In 1971, he was included in the visionary books Frontiers of Photography and Color (Life Library of Photography), both published by Time-Life. He has done more than 50 photography magazine covers, including covers for Newsweek and Life.
