About the Item

A simple yet complex structure always characterizes Mitchell Funk's work. In present work, the first concept is that old New York City icons emerge above new construction. The second concept, and the one that makes this Mitchell Funk image unique, is the photographer's shooting location, composition, and unexpected use of color. Funk chooses an disorderly industrial location to shoot meticulous spaced, sleek and shimmering architecture. He shoots through a gaggle of telephone poles, razor wire and chain link fencing that simultaneously frame and obscure the main subject matter—the Midtown Skyline. His use of color is triumphant, with a hazy blue skyline accented by a punchy red foreground element. Finally, Funk frames the scene tightly to balance all aspects harmoniously. Of particular note is how the two wooden telephone poles echo the shapes of the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. The work is part of Funks series: Mitchell Funk Photographs the Chrysler Building for 50 Years. Signed dated lower right, numbered on lr recto. 2/15 printed later, unframed. other sizes available.
