The theme of 'Between the Sea and the Mountain – Kumano' is the shooting of pre-mythological landscapes. The series records the path starting at the sea and leading to the mountains via the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, which was created through years of work by both man and nature. In our contemporary society flooded with photographs shot with digital cameras and cell phones, the act of looking at photographs is frequently carried out as a means to confirm known information, making any surprising visual experience rare. This situation has forced Suzuki to become self-conscious about the photographic medium. Suzuki aimed to capture the landscapes of Kumano that ancient peoples saw and identified as mythic sights. He strove to capture primordial landscapes that were seen before people learned to read and define objects of their gaze cerebrally. In this series, he released the shutter in response to light, wind, and sound in order to incorporate fluctuations in the external environment.
Risaku Suzuki was born in 1963 in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan and now lives and works in Tokyo. He is well known for his dedicated series of pictures from Kumano, Wakayama Prefecture, one of Japan's most sacred places and the home of Suzuki. One of Japan's most prominent photographers, Suzuki presents unmistakably Japanese subjects - like cherry blossoms and snow - which are both timeless and refreshingly new. ‘In my opinion, contemporary photography should be based on conceptual thoughts and committed to creation. It takes strength and enthusiasm to make photography your goal in life. The opinion that pictures of every day life, like those of his dog, his girlfriend and the like, are equal to creative expression, would be too undemanding. To really emphasize the ‘power of photography’, deep passion is central - in every age and situation - and the ability of a photographer to visualize a concept.’ – Risaku Suzuki

Throughout her career, photographer Yoko Ikeda has been finding poetry in the prosaic, and mystery in the mundane. Her photographs serve to form an imaginary world, loosely based on commonplace subjects. Working mostly in Japan, but also in Belgium, the Netherlands, the United States and elsewhere, she has created images both ominous and inviting, uncanny in their ability to coax the unexpected from the known.
Ikeda was born in Kanazawa City, and now lives and works in Tokyo. Her work has been exhibited in many one-person and group shows throughout Japan, as well as in Belgium and various venues in the United States. In 2013, she was the recipient of the prestigious Philadelphia Museum of Art Purchase Award, and her work is included in their collection. In 2016, Nazraeli pressed published her first monograph, entitled Monkey Puzzle...
