20"x30" color photograph, limited edition of 5, signed by the artist. A yellow ochre field, scored with rows of parallel lines creates the background fro this abstract landscape photograph. With a minimalist approach to photography, Wetherall's photographic eye incorporates geometry and golden ratio proportions to balance line, shape and color. She selects elemental grounds and reduced natural color palettes to create visually harmonious contemporary photographs. Here a small trio of trees stand in the center of this composition, each giving a tonal range to green, with a sage colored tree, verdant light green and a dark forest green. There is a sense of isolation in this photograph, and a feeling of longing.
Zoe Wetherall is a Brooklyn-based photographer from Australia, who travels the world to photograph abstract aerial landscapes from the point of view of a hot air balloon. Zoe Wetherall photographs at a pace and elevation that gives a truly unique perspective. Hovering about the landscape in a hot air balloon these photographs have abstract the landscape by removing the line of the horizon.
Zoe Wetherall’s photos are taken just above us, a bird’s eye view. From a few hundred feet Wetherall photographs straight downward, excluding the horizon, sky, or any visual reference point.
Her photos tell stories and inspire questions. In another photograph a wavy line of bushes separates finely mowed grass from a dense blue water, carefully manicured, and refined–but what is it? She records the structured geometry of natural and man-made forms and uses her camera to reveal the beauty in the subtle patterns hidden in architecture and landscape.
