About the Item

Lorna Simpson is an American artist renowned as a pioneer of conceptual photography. Her artwork, regardless of medium, explores the interplay between historical memory, culture, and identity. Influential in post-colonial and feminist circles, Simpson’s work explores the ways in which race and gender shape human interactions, specifically in the United States. The use, and often combination of, portraiture and text, are Simpson's signature elements. "Partition and Time" is emblematic of Simpson's practice. It's a black and white photograph-and-text work that challenges conventional views of gender, identity and memory. The unidentified figure is duplicated, both turning away from the viewer's gaze. This woman's refusal to be looked at arguably denies colonialist tropes of visual consumption. This artwork was included in the legendary portfolio Photographers + Friends United Against AIDS. It included works by eleven other artists including Tina Barney, Jeff Wall, Thomas Ruff, James Welling, Sarah Charlesworth, and Andres Serrano. Lorna Simpson has been exhibited and collected by museums around the world. In 2007 the Whitney organized a retrospective of her work. Some of the other institutions that hold her work include the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and Haus der Kunst; Munich amongst others.
