About the Artist:
Marco studied fine art at Pratt Institute and the Art Students League in New York. New York Times photography critic Gene Thornton called Marco “a Minimalist, whose images are sensual, whimsical, often surreal, always strong, and deceptively simple.”

This rare Basquiat photograph was taken from Nicholas Taylor’s well-documented portfolio exploring his friendship with Jean-Michel Basquiat - a friendship which began when both collaborated on the historic New York No Wave band, “GRAY” in the late 1970s; before the two briefly lived together in the East Village. Selections from Taylor's portfolio were most notably exhibited as part of the Basquiat retrospective at London's Barbican in 2017 and have been featured in numerous noteworthy publications on Basquiat.

Nicholas Taylor (American, b. 1953) is a renowned photographer and musician. Taylor moved to New York in 1977 to pursue a career as a photographer and it was through the vibrant New York art scene that he came to know the young artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat. It was, in fact, his intimate portfolio of photographs documenting his friendship with Basquiat that rocketed Taylor to fame. The two would collaborate in the No Wave band “Gray” before Taylor launched a successful career as a DJ famous for track-looping. His track “Suicide Mode” would later be used in the soundtrack for Julian Schnabel’s 1996 film “Basquiat."
Circa 1981, Basquiat payed homage to Taylor by incorporating "Nick Taylor" and "DJ High Priest" (a title anointed him by Basquiat) into two separate drawings. While everyone else in the downtown tries to take credit, it was in fact Taylor who first introduced Jean-Michel to Madonna - at the Mudd Club - the very place this one of a kind image was captured.

Peter Brown attended Stanford University (BA English, MFA Photography) and has taught in the art departments at Rice and at Stanford. He has exhibited and published his work widely.
His photographic awards include the Dorothea Lange – Paul Taylor Prize (with Kent Haruf) from the Duke Center for Documentary Studies; an Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for a photo-essay published in DoubleTake; an Imogen Cunningham Award for his portfolio Seasons of Light; a graduate fellowship from the Carnegie Foundation; an Artist’s Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts; an Artist’s Grant from the Cultural Arts Council of Houston and a publication grant from the Graham Foundation. “I began living in the United States in 1975 as a Vietnamese refugee. Consequently, cultural identity and cultural authenticity are some of the underlying themes of my visual explorations. Additionally, site-specificity has been an integral part of my studio practice, as I always consider geographical, historical, and cultural significance of the locations in my research.
“From 2015 to 2017, I made photographs from my hotel window in Ho Chi Minh City, District 1. The second-floor window offered a commanding view of the alley where it widened before the sharp left turn located under my hotel where it became narrow again. The alley served as a short cut between the congested street where it began and ended at a crowded market. What separated my camera from the alleyway was the large glass window to dampen the noise and the thin white curtain for privacy. I spent close to six months in this sixty-four square-foot hotel room, photographing obsessively from six in the morning until late at night, only taking breaks to eat or to sleep. During my process, I remained as objective as a scientist gathering visual data. The camera tripod allowed me to keep the same perspective of the scenes outside my window throughout the day.
“With this work, I aim to document, as if from the perspective of a natural scientist or archeologist. Using the camera to record facts rather than regarding it as a subjective tool, I have become increasingly intrigued with the idea of mapping my ‘own’ culture in hopes of understanding it from an outsider’s point of view using the hotel room as a metaphor for an in-between place. The window curtain was the variable that changed, in addition to the light, which also varied throughout the day. The curtain was a literal veil to the world and the culture outside my window. It serves as a metaphor for the lack of clarity and insight that I may have of my culture. From the alley I am hidden or visible depending on how wide the curtain was kept and the time of the day. The neatly arranged architecture seen from my window illustrated the rich history and the complex transition of the Vietnamese culture from French colonial, to American modernist, to contemporary high-rise.
“The project began as a survey to categorize different types of people, record gestures and behavior, map traffic patterns, and capture ‘decisive’ moments of street scenes below. Conceptually, I intended this mapping project only to reveal my difficulties of defining home—however as the project grew, the complexities of the images also have become more layered. The first image of the series revealing a man masturbating at 6:00 a.m. while leaning against his scooter below the hotel window addresses the voyeuristic nature of the project. About Leni Sinclair
A recognized leader of the 1960s-70s counter cultural movement in Detroit and a trusted documenter of the rock n’ roll scene of that same era, Leni Sinclair is known for her vivid photographs which captured faithfully the raw drama that unfolded before her lens. But she may be best known for capturing the raucous rock n’ roll scene of that era, including photographs of such rock legends as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, and jazz icons such as Miles Davis and Sun Ra.
Focusing her lens on musicians and fellow activists from nightclubs to festivals to street demonstrations, Sinclair captured a pivotal era in American history when art and politics intertwined. Some of her photos – including shots of jazz saxophonist John Coltrane and of Nigeria’s rebel music star Fela Kuti – are among the most widely known of their subjects. What seems, at first glance, to be candid scenes featuring musicians, activists, party goers and demonstrators, read together as a more powerful story: that of an American society where art and politics were inextricably intertwined.
Of recent notoriety Sinclair was exhibited at Detroit’s MOCAD (Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit) as part of her first major U.S. solo museum exhibition, “Moto City Underground”. The 80-year-old artist, author and social justice organizer still lives in Detroit, where she married politically active poet and jazz critic John Sinclair...
