About the Item
This is a framed photographic print. Francois' Animalia series is described as “a photographic menagerie of startling, sensitive portraits.” The series started when the artist saw a giraffe poking its head over a fence against a bright white sky. Francois often takes her pictures about 5 – 6 feet away, with a wide-angle lens from below, and uses and develops real film before printing editions of the work. The animals are often in sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers, reversing the traditional wildlife portrait narrative.
Nine holds a Masters of Fine Art degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Her work has been represented internationally in publications such as Communication Arts, Foto&Video (Moscow) and The British Journal of Photography. Her photographs are part of numerous public and private collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern & Mexican Photography, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the University of Texas at Dallas collection.
Nine currently lives in Austin, Texas where she has taught photography at Texas State University, the University of Texas at Austin and Austin Community College.

Nine Francois
NINE FRANCOIS produces close-up photographs of animals which are presented against a stark white background. The artist shoots up close – very close – with a wide angle lens, and frequently from below to get unusual perspectives. In describing this Francois says, “By isolating the subject against a nearly-bare background, and presenting these animals out of context, the innate power and beauty of their form becomes the subject of the photograph. In this way, these images can become iconic and transcendent. At the same time, photographing from such close proximity also brings particularity and individuality to the animal, especially if the animal makes eye contact with the viewer. At this point, the animal goes beyond being a removed, iconic presence and becomes a palpable unique spirit as individualistic and valuable as any human counterpart. For me, it is important that both aspects of the creature be accessible to the viewer in my photographs as I feel that animals play a critical double role as inspiring archetype and sacred friend.”
