A stunning and completely unique multi-exposure contact sheet personally created by photographer, Bert Stern, from his revered 1962 photoshoot, 'The Last Sitting'. Composed of nine intimate, sensual and vibrant images - four of which were personally crossed out in lipstick by Miss Monroe in June 1962 - this arresting multi-faceted artwork provides a fascinating window into the seminal 3-day photoshoot at Los Angeles' exclusive, Bel-Air Hotel. Combining the creative contributions of both Marilyn Monroe and Bert Stern, the unique structure of this artwork shows Marilyn's personal opinion of when she was beautiful and when she was not - a captivating insight into the self-image of the one of the world's most celebrated and iconic stars. Complied and printed under Stern's personal supervision in 1979, this oversized one-of-a-kind Fuji Crystal Paper Archive Print Contact Sheet Creation measures 36 x 34 inches (91.4 x 86.4 cm) and is flush mounted on an acid-free museum board, measuring 42 inches square (106.7cm). It includes two exhibition labels on the mount verso - one with Stern's signature in ink. This prestigious and unique artwork was shown at the Boris Gallery of Photography, Boston, from December 18th, 1979, to January 25th, 1980, and is a rare and exclusive treasure. Stern had a unique vision for the session and wanted to shoot a selection of photos of Marilyn, posing naked, covered only by jewellery or translucent silk harlequin scarves. This was a daring strategy, and Marilyn didn't have the courage to remove all her clothes until late into the evening. With the obvious exception of her famous red velvet 1949 nude shoot for photographer, Tom Kelley, Marilyn had never before allowed a photographer such intimate access, and Stern's lens captured over 2500 truly remarkable and intimate images of a fragile, sensual and playful woman, who would tragically die just a few weeks later.
