“Easy on the Eyes: Harriet” Photograph of a Beautiful Man on the Lawn

2010

About the Item

“Easy on the Eyes: Harriet“ is a staged photograph of an attractive man lying on the lawn. In this cinematic photo series, I explore the female gaze by providing visual pleasure specifically designed for a female viewer—though others may look over her shoulder. Each scene includes a male character depicted in mid-narrative and an “implied woman” somewhere just outside the frame. She is not visible, but we do see her discarded hat near a croquet game. He is the photograph’s subject matter, but she is the narrative’s protagonist. Each photograph is titled for the female character in the quoted text. The text panel and image are printed together on a single sheet of paper. The implied narrative of the photograph is juxtaposed with a passage from a novel or short story by a prominent female author describing a male character. The text disrupts, misdirects, and complicates the implied narrative of the photographic image (read text below). This photograph is an Archival Pigment Print on Cotton Fiber Paper, printed in a limited-edition of 10. The standard print sizes are 15 x 30” and 20 x 40”. The photograph is signed and numbered on the back and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Prints are sold unframed; framing may be arranged for an additional cost. Free shipping may be available from 1st Dibs. Apply code: FREESHIP. Text panel: “Gaudy Night" by Dorothy L. Sayers. “Who is that incredibly beautiful young man?” “Flaxman’s fiancé, I expect, isn’t it?” “A beautiful young man?” said Miss Pyke. “I should like to see him.” She moved to the window. “Don’t be ridiculous,” said the Dean. “I know Flaxman’s Byron by heart. This is an ash-blond in a House blazer.” “Oh, dear me!” said Miss Pyke. “Apollo Belvedere in spotless flannels. He appears to be unattached. Remarkable.” Harriet put down her cup and rose from the depths of the largest armchair. . . . “Why all the excitement, anyway?” asked Miss Hillyard. “Beautiful young men are always exciting,” said the Dean. “That,” said Harriet, at length getting a glimpse of the wonder-youth over Miss Pyke’s shoulder, “is Viscount Saint-George.”. . . She curled herself into the window seat and watched for nearly ten minutes. The viscount sat still, smoking a cigarette, and looking entirely at his ease.
