"GHOST SHOWS A PAINTING", 2018, is a color photograph by Sophia Rauch, one in a series of "Ghost" pictures. It's an inkjet print on Hahnemeule Photo Rag Paper, and measures 36x24". Characteristic of the artist's work, "Ghost Shows a Painting" is a portrait in a fully realized abstract tableau consisting of cardboard, vellum, acrylic paint, costume, rubber globes, oil paint, spray paint, and performance. "Ghost Shows a Painting" is available in an edition of 10, each signed and numbered by the artist.
From Sophia Rauch – "My photographs present the artist at work in a fantastical, abstracted version of reality. The artist is depicted as a costumed figure posing for the camera, mimicking the postures and tropes of classical figure painting and portraiture. The pictured artist is called Ghost, referring to the simple costume they wear."
The artist builds intricate life-size sets for Ghost to act within, exploring painterly tools of composition and mark-making. Each prop becomes a mark in her vernacular, and a tool at her disposal. The sets flatten within the photograph, oscillating between painting and photographic languages. Combining sculpture, painting and photography in alternatively symbiotic and cannibalistic ways, Sophia Rauch's work examines traditional conceptions of beauty and upends romantic stereotypes of creative production.
Sophia Rauch's work has appeared in group shows across the U.S., including Ground Floor Gallery, Underdonk Gallery, and Fastnet, in Brooklyn, NY; also LaMaMa Gallery, White Columns, Visual Arts Gallery, and Umbrella House, in New York City; also the Whitney Houston Biennial, Julius Cesar, the Hills Esthetic Center, in Chicago, IL; and in Colorado at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and at Posse (private collector). A solo show of her work, "With Your Hands" was presented by Underdonk Gallery, Brooklyn, NY in 2015.
Sophia Rauch received her BFA at the School of Visual Arts in 2008, her MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012. Originally from Berkeley, California, she currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
