David Bowie and William Burroughs in Los Angeles, February 1974, signed Terry O'Neill, 8x10" print, custom framed with non-glare museum glass, 8ply matting and a simple black frame.

On 28 February 1974, Rolling Stone magazine published a remarkable interview between rock icon David Bowie and famed author William Burroughs. David Bowie had recently retired the Ziggy Stardust persona and was opening a new chapter of his music career. This encounter between the two icons – Bowie was a huge admirer of Burroughs – became one of the classic pieces in rock journalism ever published. Terry O’Neill’s image of the two accompanied the feature.
Terry remembered the encounter well. “It was only a few weeks after I first photographed David Bowie that he rang-me up. I remember him saying ‘you have to come over to the office and meet the most interesting person.’ It was hard to turn down an opportunity like that! When I arrived, David introduced me to William Burroughs. I have to admit, I wasn’t familiar with Burroughs or his work. I could tell that David was absolutely inspired by this guy. I just thought, well, I’ll just take some photos of Bowie with this man, and that would be that. Little did I realize how important those photographs would be.”

Terry O'Neill
Terry O’Neill was one of the world’s most collected photographers, with work hanging in national art galleries and private collections worldwide. From presidents to pop stars, he photographed the frontline of fame for over six decades.
O’Neill began his career at the birth of the 1960s. While other photographers concentrated on earthquakes, wars and politics, O’Neill realized that youth culture was a breaking news story on a global scale and began chronicling the emerging faces of film, fashion and music who would go on to define the Swinging Sixties. By 1965 he was being commissioned by the biggest magazines and newspapers in the world.
No other photographer embraced the span of fame as O'Neill had, capturing the icons of our age from Winston Churchill to Nelson Mandela, from Frank Sinatra and Elvis to Amy Winehouse, from Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot to Nicole Kidman, as well as every James Bond from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig.
O’Neill photographed The Beatles and The Rolling Stones when they were still struggling young bands in 1963 and pioneered backstage reportage photography with David Bowie, Elton John, The Who, Eric Clapton and Chuck Berry. His images have adorned historic rock albums, movie posters and international magazine covers.

Jake recalls the session: “I travelled from NYC to London in February 2004 to do a press shoot with Amy Winehouse. It was a classic February day: cold, wet, foggy and dark by about 4pm. We met at her flat and went to a few of her local haunts: a cafe, a launderette, Primrose Hill. The record company were very hands off and didn’t pressure us to do any particular set ups. We just went with the flow. She was really entertaining: funny, smart and cooly indiscreet. I am a huge jazz fan and I remember we talked about music, London and New York.”
