His approach to is far from conventional, avoiding the typical "cuddly-bear greeting card" aesthetic, and instead focusing on capturing the unique qualities of newborn puppies. Describing his work, the artist has said, "photographing puppies in the first two weeks is simple. Just set them down, or up, and shoot. Group them together in various formations. Watch them flow into different positions." Wegman's photographs, videotapes, paintings and drawings have been exhibited in museums and galleries internationally. A retrospective of his work originated by the Kunstmuseum in Lucerne traveled to museums throughout Europe and the United States including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. His work is held in the collections of major museums around the world including Centre Pompidou, Paris, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA, Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, Museum of Modern Art, NY, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN, and Whitney Museum of American Art, NY.
