Buoys Blue-Orange (Circular Nautical Still Life Photo of Ocean Buoys on White)

2010

About the Item

Nautical color still life photograph of blue and orange buoys on a white background archival pigment print, edition of 10 20 x 20 inch paper size with 16 inch diameter image size This contemporary nautical still life photograph was made by Hudson Valley based photographer, David Halliday. The image of colorful fishing buoys are part of the artist's 'Portal' series. Here the artist pairs the bright orange and blue buoys on a white tabletop and crackle patterned off-white wall paper. The neutral palette takes a chic and minimalist take on rustic nautical imagery. The print is also available in a 32 inch diameter on 37 x 37 inch paper About the artist: Whether traveling to a foreign land, wandering through a neighborhood marketto shop for food, or engaging in convivial conversation with a friend at his home,David Halliday is easily charmed, intrigued, excited, or amused by all that surroundshim. An artful documenter of life, Haliday uses his camera as a tool for recording themultitudinous special moments that capture his attention. Once in the darkroom, heeditorializes his finds, subtly embellishing each image until it somehow evokes thesensation that led him to photograph a subject in the first place. With the exception of a series of platinum print portraits, Halliday produces all of hisphotographs as sepia toned silver gelatin prints. Both processes are highly trad-itional and, in requiring that the artist avoid the use of any color other than sepia, they stand in sharp contrast to splashier modes such as Cibachrome, Polaroid, or digitally produced Iris prints […]. For Halliday, the warm tones afforded by age-old processes reflect his desire to reclaim the past or cherish the present in the form of soft, tranquil, frozen moments in time. Concurrent with his preoccupation with objects and still life arrangements, Hallidayhas photographed a considerable range of landscape settings, having travelled notonly to Tonga, but also to such varied locales as Portugal, Iceland, Indonesia, andIreland. Additionally, the Louisiana countryside not far from his home in New Orleansand the beaches of Massachusetts, where he has friends and family, have providedhim with endless stimuli for his camera's lens. Establishing intimate connections with his subjects has always been important for Halliday, whether photographing the exotic residents of Tonga or youthful high school bands preparing for the annual Mardi Gras in New Orleans. As with objects or places,he photographs the inhabitants of the planet with unbridled reverence for the beauty and value of life. And lest time pass too quickly, Halliday will continue to use his camera to slow it down ever so much…just enough to freeze it for eternity. (excerpt from an essay by David S. Rubin for the catalog of the exhibition When Time Stands Still. The Photographs of David Halliday at the Contemporary Art Center,New Orleans, July 13 - September 15, 2002)

  • Clam Shells (Still Life Photograph of Purple & White Shells with Drift Wood)
    By David Halliday
    Located in Hudson, NY
Still life photograph of purple and white clam shells on pale grey and beige background archival pigment print, made in 2007 by David Halliday 10 X 15 inches unframed Edition of 25 In this series, Halliday captures the beauty of 'the ordinary' in still lifes of various objects and vegetation arranged against simple backgrounds. This nautical themed still life of deep purple and white clam shells beside a piece of drift wood is set on a light grey table top against a cream colored wood wall. The subtle color palette extenuates the various textures and gentle shadows cast on the objects. About the artist: American, b. 1958, Glen Cove, NY, United States, based in Schodack Landing, NY, United States Elegant still lifes bathed in natural light, so masterfully composed one could forget that it is, in fact, a photograph – this is how we’ve come to recognize David Halliday’s work. The artist first gained recognition for his sepia toned silver gelatin prints of common place objects and food staples, emphasized by sublime balances of form, texture, and shadow one could liken to classical painting. In more recent years the artist began embracing his subject matter with modern pops of color in surreal arrangements; vegetables and fruits eccentrically coupled with fish nets and cutlery balanced on undefined tabletops, seeming to float in midair. Now the photographer is retracting his lens to encompass the studio itself as his subject. In a self-portrait of sorts, Halliday skillfully combines elements of his craft in a modest interior view. Halliday was one of the first artists Carrie Haddad began representing when she opened the gallery 27 years ago. Since then he has exhibited nationally and in Europe. He now lives and works in Schodack Landing by way of New Orleans and Nantucket.
