About the Item
The bulldog, known as Handsome Dan, is the mascot of Yale University, located in New Haven, Connecticut. This poster was created in 1909 by Abigail Kellogg Hazard. The poster compliments a sister image for Princeton University featuring the school's tiger mascot. The crest of the University appears in the corner of the artwork.
In the late 19th Century, the Ivy League Universities began to develop mascots to represent the school. Princeton adopted a real tiger cub as their mascot, while Harvard used the real life figure of John the Orange Man to represent their sports division. Yale followed suite with the adoption of a bulldog affectionately named “Handsome Dan”.
In 1889, crew and football tackle, Andrew B. Graves purchased the English bulldog from a New Haven blacksmith. The dog became popular with students at sporting events and was led across the fields before the start of football games. The original Dan was renown for his lovable ugliness and unruly attitude, but also for his love of the students which he seemed to enjoy exclusively. He competed in competitions both in America and in England and won several ribbons as a fine example of his breed. After his death in 1898, his body was stuffed and displayed in the old Yale Gymnasium and is now on view in the Yale's Payne Whitney Gymnasium. Since his death the tradition of Handsome Dan has continued to the current bulldog, Handsome Dan XVII.
This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster printed on heavyweight paper and is in excellent condition.

Original Vintage Poster for Australia - The Great Barrier Reef by Eileen Mayo
By Eileen Mayo
Located in Boca Raton, FL
This original vintage travel poster, titled "Australia – The Great Barrier Reef," was created in 1956 by Eileen Mayo for the Australian National Travel Association. It is one of the most celebrated examples of mid-century Australian travel advertising, brilliantly capturing the wonder and biodiversity of the world’s largest coral reef system. The composition features a richly stylized underwater scene, teeming with fish, coral, and marine flora rendered in bold, naturalistic colors. Mayo’s intricate detailing and balanced composition invite viewers into a magical aquatic world—simultaneously educational and awe-inspiring.
Eileen Mayo (1906–1994) was a British-born artist, designer, and printmaker who later became a major artistic voice in both New Zealand and Australia. Trained at the Slade School of Fine Art in London and later under Claude Flight at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, Mayo's career spanned book illustration, painting, tapestry, and poster design. She was especially known for her scientific accuracy combined with a strong design sense—a rare combination that made her work particularly well-suited to natural subjects and public commissions.
After emigrating to Australia in the early 1950s, Mayo quickly became an integral figure in the Australian art world. She designed postage stamps, illustrated educational materials, and worked closely with government agencies on visual campaigns, including those promoting tourism and environmental awareness. Her work is characterized by a deep respect for nature, clarity of form, and a graceful merging of art and science.
This poster exemplifies Mayo’s talent for transforming biological detail into captivating visual storytelling. Her sensitivity to nature and compositional discipline make this one of the finest Australian travel posters...

Larry Hayden is a visual artist whose drawings and photographs reflect his fascination with his domestic environment and its feathered inhabitants. An ongoing series of photographs spanning nearly five years show him to be an animalier; his subject is his small flock of laying hens who share with him a picturesque 19th century Maine farm that once covered one hundred thirty acres, and whose Northern edge was the Presumpscot River. Now reduced to a bit less than one acre and surrounded by residential Portland, it is this little world that is the core subject of Larry’s work.
His photographs; paintings; and drawings are in respected collections including the Portland Museum of Art; Bates College Art Museum; the Colby Museum of Art; The Farnsworth Museum; the Fine Art Collection of William and Hobart Smith Colleges, and the University of New England Art Gallery, as well as distinguished corporate, institutional, and private collections.
Larry’s work has been included in many publications including Design Language, 2006, Tim McCreight, Brynmorgen Press; Abstract Art, Dean Nimmer...
