(after) Georges Braque
The Black Birds - Lithograph After Georges Braque - 1958

1958

About the Item

The Black Birds is a lithograph published by Maeght after an original composition by Georges Braque in 1958. Braque authorized and selected certain works to be reproduced by his trusted publisher and they were printed to the highest standards in limited editions under his direct supervision. "G.B." is printed in the lower right margin; edition of 300. Good condition. Reference : Dora Vallier, "Braque", Flammarion, 1982, p. 294 (Maeght 1027) The artwork is an abstract composition realized by Braque during the 1950s, after the great success reached by the artist during the 1930s. The advent of World War II influenced Braque to paint abstract compositions. After the war, he painted birds, landscapes and the sea. During those years, he also created lithographs, sculptures, and stained-glass windows. The lithograph represents an abstract composition with birds on a light blue backcloth: in the foreground, there are black silhouettes representing two swallows; in the background, there is a black shape that recalls a flock of birds. The whole composition is surrounded by a black line. Georges Braque (Argenteuil, 1882 - Paris, 1963) was an important French painter. In 1904, he moved to Paris where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1907, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants; during the same year, thanks to the intermediation of Guillaume Apollinaire, he met Pablo Picasso. This encounter would be very important for the future development of the style of Braque’s work and for the birth of Cubism. In 1909, after another exposition at the Salon des Indépendants, Louis Vauxcelles wrote about his artwork: “bizarreries cubiques”. Along with Cubism, Braque used the techniques of Impressionism, Fauvism and collage, and was even a scenographer for the Ballet Russes. Image Dimensions : 34 x 42 cm

He spent time with an art tutor and learnt to draw. In 2002, when creating the The Motivation print, he told Anna and Laura from Belgravia Gallery of his desire to become a full time artist when he retired. This artwork is a handwritten Artist’s Motivation by Nelson Mandela and reads: “Today when I look at Robben Island I see it as a celebration of the struggle and a symbol of the finest qualities of the human spirit, rather than as a monument to the brutal tyranny and oppression of apartheid. Robben Island is a place where courage endured in the face of endless hardship, a place where people kept on believing when it seemed their dreams were hopeless and a place where wisdom and determination overcame fear and human frailty. It is true that Robben Island was once a place of darkness, but out of that darkness has come a wonderful brightness, a light so powerful that it could not be hidden behind prison walls, held back by prison bars...
