Excellent quality, rich vivid colors, intense black and red, with touches of pink and golden yellow ochre, an impressive, bold, composition by the American Abstract Expressionist painter, printer, collage maker and author Robert Motherwell.

Robert Motherwell (January 24, 1915 – July 16, 1991) was an American abstract expressionist painter, printmaker, and editor. He was one of the youngest of the New York School, which also included Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. Trained in philosophy, Motherwell became an artist, regarded as among the most articulate spokesmen and the founders of the abstract expressionist painters. He was known for his series of abstract paintings and prints which touched on political, philosophical and literary themes, such as the Elegies to the Spanish Republic.

Robert Motherwell (1915–1991) was a prominent American painter and printmaker associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement. Born in Aberdeen, Washington, he studied at Stanford University and later earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Harvard. Motherwell gained fame for his "Elegy to the Spanish Republic" series, reflecting the Spanish Civil War's influence through bold, gestural brushwork. Appel attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Amsterdam (1940–43), and helped found the “Reflex” group, which became known as CoBRA (for Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam), in 1948. He moved to Paris in 1950 and by the 1960s had settled in New York City; he later lived in Italy and Switzerland.
