About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Alexandre Garbell (1903–1970), titled Sans titre (Untitled), originates from the 1962 album Albert Camus, oeuvres completes, Recits et romans, L'Etranger, La Peste, La Chute, lithographies originales de Garbell (Albert Camus, complete works, Stories and Novels, The Stranger, The Plague, The Fall, original lithographs by Garbell). Published by Imprimerie Nationale, Paris, under the direction of Andre Sauret, editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, April 12, 1962, the composition reflects Garbell's atmospheric and lyrical visual language, shaped by soft luminosity, poetic color harmonies, and the dreamlike qualities that define his oeuvre. Executed as a lithograph on velin d'Arches filigrane paper, this work measures 11 x 8.5 inches (27.94 x 21.59 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. Printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, one of the foremost fine art lithographic ateliers of the twentieth century. It was composed by hand with a new cast of Romain du Roi de corps 14, engraved by Grandjean in 1699 on the order of Louis XIV. The draw was completed on January 12, 1962 on the presses of l'Imprimerie Nationale, Daniel Gibelin being director and Georges Arnoult inspector of typography. The original lithographies were drawn on the presses of Mourlot Freres. Justification for the draw, 200 examples on velin d'Arches filigrane, "Albert Camus" numbered to the press from I to CC. Each of the six volumes includes, printed on Japon Nacre, a series of illustrations and an additional original lithography numbered and signed by the artist. 4,800 examples on velin d'Arches filigrane, "Albert Camus" numbered to the press from CCI to VMMM, and some non-commerce examples reserved for publishing artisans. Compositions destroyed and stones erased after drawing. About the Publication: Albert Camus, oeuvres completes, Recits et romans, L'Etranger, La Peste, La Chute, lithographies originales de Garbell (Albert Camus, complete works, Stories and Novels, The Stranger, The Plague, The Fall, original lithographs by Garbell) stands as a monumental undertaking in the tradition of the French livre d'artiste, uniting Camus's seminal literary works with original fine art lithographs created expressly for the edition. Directed by master publisher Andre Sauret and executed at the historic Imprimerie Nationale, the project embodies centuries of French typographic heritage through the use of the Romain du Roi typeface commissioned by Louis XIV, paired with the modern artistic sensibility of Garbell. Mourlot Freres, the premier Parisian atelier responsible for producing original lithographs for Picasso, Matisse, Miro, Braque, Chagall, and numerous modern masters, drew the lithographic plates with exceptional precision, ensuring the highest possible fidelity to the artist's vision. Each volume of the Camus collected works includes both Japon Nacre inserts and original lithographs, reflecting a level of material and artistic luxury aligned with the great postwar editions de luxe. The publication represents a rare intersection of literature, philosophy, fine printing, and modern art, commemorating Camus’s enduring humanist and existential legacy through the interpretive lens of Garbell’s atmospheric and lyrical abstraction. The album remains an important example of mid-century French publishing, celebrated for its craftsmanship, intellectual rigor, and the exceptional collaboration between Sauret, the Imprimerie Nationale, Mourlot Freres, and the artists who contributed original prints. About the Artist: Alexandre Garbell (1903–1970) was a Russian-born French painter celebrated for his atmospheric fusion of Post-Impressionism, lyrical abstraction, and poetic color harmonies, producing dreamy landscapes, still lifes, and urban vistas that positioned him among the most distinctive voices of the Ecole de Paris and one of the era's most refined interpreters of mood, light, and emotional resonance. Immersed in the vibrant artistic and intellectual circles of early- to mid-20th-century Paris, Garbell absorbed the radical innovations of Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, synthesizing elements of Cubism, Fauvism, and Surrealism into paintings defined by soft luminosity, layered brushwork, and an almost musical approach to color and composition. His peers within the Ecole de Paris—including Jules Pascin, Andre Derain, Maurice Utrillo, Othon Friesz, and Francis Gruber—shared the same cultural landscape of experimentation and cosmopolitan exchange, yet Garbell distinguished himself through a uniquely introspective sensibility that transformed iconic settings such as Paris, Venice, and the French countryside into lyrical, meditative worlds suspended between memory and dream. Influencing later generations of lyrical abstractionists and contemporary painters drawn to atmospheric color fields, psychological landscapes, and expressive tonal shifts, Garbell's work has gained renewed scholarly and market attention as collectors increasingly appreciate his role as a bridge between early modernist innovation and mid-century poetic abstraction. Exhibited widely in Paris, London, New York, and across Europe, his paintings appear in significant private and public collections, admired for their emotional subtlety, shimmering palette, and capacity to evoke both place and inner experience with remarkable delicacy. The highest auction record for Alexandre Garbell was achieved on December 4, 2014, when Venise, Le Grand Canal sold for 46,329 USD at Sotheby's London, confirming the enduring strength, rarity, and desirability of his evocative oeuvre.
