Andre Minaux French, (1923 - 1986)
Andre Minaux
(b Paris, 5 Sept 1923). French painter and printmaker. He studied under Maurice Brianchon at the Ecole National Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (1941–5). From 1944 he exhibited at the Salon d’Automne, Salon des Indépendants and Salon de Mai and had his first one-man show at the Galerie des Impressions d’Art in Paris in 1946. In 1949 he participated in the second Homme-Témoin group exhibition at the Galerie Claude and the same year won the Prix de la Critique.
The social realism of Homme-Témoin was in tune with Minaux’s own work, in which he pared away detail and employed thickly painted, expressive brushstrokes in subdued colours to depict everyday scenes, as in Seated Woman (c. 1949; see Chevalier, pl. 4). In the same style were a number of townscapes, such as Landscape of Toury Ferrotes (1950; Paris, Pompidou), and such still-lifes as Armchair in an Interior (1951; London, Tate). He also made lithographs to illustrate books, for example Jules Amédée Barbey d’Aurevilly’s L’Ensorcelée (1955), Jules Renard’s Les Philippe (1958) and Blaise Cendrars’s La Grande Route. In 1960 Minaux exhibited the large work The Wedding (1957–60; see Besson, pl. 1) at the Maison de la Pensée Française in Paris.
Covering an area of 20 sq. m, the painting depicted an interior scene with figures gathered in celebration, which was compared by contemporaries to Gustave Courbet’s Burial at Ornans (1849–50; Paris, Mus. d’Orsay). From the 1960s his colours brightened yet his work became more serene, although the subject-matter remained the same. In the 1970s he concentrated on the theme of women in interiors in a series of coloured etchings, where the forms were flattened and abstracted, as in Denise (1976–7; see exh. cat., p. 17). Also in the 1970s he made etchings of still-lifes mainly depicting elements taken from the artist’s studio, as in Two Palettes (1976–7; see exh. cat., p. 4).

Andre Minaux
Andre Minaux was a Contemporary French painter, draftsman, lithographer, engraver, illustrator and sculptor. He belonged to the illustrious School of Paris, to the Young Painting movement in the 1950s and then to the group of Painters Witnesses of their time. His search for perfection in his work was compared to that of Matisse by Jean Bouret. (Minaux, Sauret Editions, 1977). He belonged to the illustrious School of Paris, to the Young Painting movement in the 1950s and then to the group of Painters Witnesses of their time. André Minaux embraces several periods: naturalism, rural, baroque, figurative and non-figurative. It was through the power of his line that he imbuded his compositions with an inexhaustible energy. In the heart of the post-war period, his works captured a euphoric context in a French expressionist realism. “It's the rhythm that brings unity to a painting,” confides André Minaux. “You could call Minaux's approach in his search for perfection 'Matissian'. (Jean Bouret, Minaux painter, Sauret editions, 1977). In 1950 The Museum of Modern Art of the city of Paris acquired one of his paintings In turn, the Tate Gallery in London quickly followed suite. He took part in the 1948 Salon d'Automne with 'Le Raccommodeur de filets', a work hailed by a multitude of art critics. A year later, his work was crowned by the critics' prize and displayed his work at the Salon des Jeunes Peintres, at the Claude gallery on rue de Seine in Paris. He exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1952 and continued to exhibit Internationally up until his passing in 1986.

Paul Jenkins, American (1923 - 2012)
Paul Jenkins, an artist originally associated with abstract expressionism, exhibits in his mature works a redefining of color, light and space on the canvas surface.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1923, Jenkins worked as a teenager in a ceramics factory, where he was first exposed to color intensity and the creation of form. From age 14 to 18, he studied drawing and painting at the city's Art Institute.
Initially interested in drama, Jenkins received a fellowship to the Cleveland Playhouse, then continued his dramatic studies in Pittsburgh at the Drama School of the Carnegie Institute of Technology.
Deciding to become an artist, Jenkins moved to New York City in 1948 and studied at the Art Students League. During Jenkins's three years at the League, Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Morris Kantor were his influential instructors.
While Jenkins continued to live and paint in New York City, his personal explorations took a metaphysical turn, which would ultimately become dominant in his work.
P.D. Ouspensky's The Search of the Miracu/ous changed the artist's thoughts on human growth and limitations, while the Chinese I Ching, through its thematic emphasis on constant change, heightened his interest in flowing paint on canvas. Painting for Jenkins became an intuitive, almost mystical process. He commented, "I paint what God is to me."
In 1953, Jenkins traveled to Paris, where, a year later, he had his first one-man show. While working at the American Artists Center, he continued to experiment with flowing paints, pouring pigment in streams of various thicknesses, with white thin spills as linear overlays.
Jenkins's intent was to deny stasis and create a literal and metaphysical sense of dynamism, while maintaining a sense of unity. Beginning in 1958, Jenkins titled each canvas Phenomena, with additional identifying words. He believed the work to be descriptive of the discovery process inherent in each painting.
Paralleling his beliefs, the artist's paintings have undergone subtle but definite changes. Beginning in the early 1 960s, a shift of color saturation and exposure of the white areas gave Jenkins's canvases an enhanced feeling of illumination.
If Jenkins's technique is unorthodox, he is in many other ways a traditional artist. He works in an acrylic medium on traditional linen canvas or fine rag paper. Often he uses an ivory knife...
