About the Item

Color etching with carborundum by Antoni Clavé "Ciel", 1971 76,4 x 57,2 cm Copy Artist's Proof Edition 95 copies Antoni Clavé (Barcelona 1913 - 2005 Saint-Tropez) worked as an assistant in a textile shop since the age of 13 and taking evening classes at an in-service art school on the side. Afterwards he finds work as an apprentice façade painter at Tolosa. By acquiring the craft and its techniques, such as making whitewash, plaster, glue and later mixing colours, the young Clavé learns the techniques of fresco painting, lettering painting, illusion painting, and so on. Poster painting and stage sets occupied him all the time, which explains his low pictorial production at the time. In 1954 Clavé decided to give up stage design and book illustration and from then on to devote himself exclusively to painting. Another retrospective of his graphic works was organised in 2004 on the occasion of the Tomàs Francisco Prieto Award at the Casa de la Moneda Museum in Madrid.
