Spanish artist Antoni Tàpies (full name: Antoni Tàpies i Puig) was born on December 23, 1923, in Barcelona. His love of art and literature became apparent at an early age. During a long period of convalescence from a lung disease, Tàpies began to paint and draw. In 1944, Tapiès began studying law, but dropped out in 1946 to devote himself entirely to art. Antoni Tàpies' early paintings were still influenced by the works of artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, and Joan Miró. After a surrealist and Dadaist phase, his works became increasingly abstract. In 1947, he created the painting "Zoom," a work that would become programmatic for his later work. In 1948, Antoni Tàpies co-founded the artist group "Dau als Set," of which he became the most important representative. In 1950, Antoni Tàpies received a scholarship from the French government, which enabled him to stay in Paris. Also in 1950, his first solo exhibition took place in Barcelona. In 1951, Tàpies traveled to Belgium and the Netherlands. In 1953, he spent a short time in New York, where an exhibition of his works was held. In 1958, he participated in the Venice Biennale, gaining international recognition. He was represented at the documenta in Kassel in 1959, 1964, 1968, and 1977.
Antoni Tàpies is considered the most important representative of Spanish Informel. He mixes sand, cement, marble dust, and glue into his paintings. He scrapes off paint and reapplies it until the surface resembles cracked masonry. Throughout his life, Tàpies has intensively studied Far Eastern philosophies. In his search for expression, he integrates individual letters, symbols, crosses, and even objects or items of clothing. Antoni Tàpies' material and wall paintings have a mysterious, meditative effect. He does not describe himself as an abstract artist, but as a realist who attempts to make reality comprehensible in his works.
In 1984, Antoni Tàpies founded the "Fundació Antoni Tàpies" in Barcelona. The artist lives and works in Barcelona, well over 80 years old.

Antoni Tàpies
Antoni Tàpies is considered to be Spain's most important painter after Picasso. His work is in the collections of the most important modern and contemporary museums around the world, as well as those of the most notable private collectors. Tàpies’s ultra-typical style was an almost industrial look, expressionistic slashes, thick impasto, rough and impassioned.
