About the Item

> Monotype, ink, varnish on red Ingres paper > signed and dated lower right Barbara Szüts was born in Bad Bleiberg in Carinthia (AUSTRIA) in 1952. She studied painting with Carl Unger at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna from 1974 to 1980. From 1986 to 2010, the artist lived in Germany, first in Hamburg and then in Cologne. In 1987, she created her first wall objects carved from plastic, which Szüts calls ‘Epigrams’. From 1998, she worked on a cycle of works based on Bach's ‘Art of the Fugue’; sculptures made of stainless steel entitled ‘Modules’ thematise the process of growth, of ascending and descending. In this way, the artist transforms the vibrations of music into sculptural forms. Numerous works by the artist now characterise the cityscape of Cologne. In 2001, she spent time as ‘artist in residence’ at the Hotel Chelsea in Cologne, where she developed light sculptures from guests' fingerprints and satellite images from space. From 2004 she was a lecturer at the Free Academy of Fine Arts in Cologne. Since the end of 2010, she has moved the centre of her life and her studio back to Vienna.

Untitled #2
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork "Untitled #2" is a colors monotype on Arches paper by Dutch artist Frans Horbach. It is hand signed and dated in pencil by the artist. The image (plate mark) is 19.5 x 15.5 inches, sheet size is 30 x 22.25 inches. It is in excellent condition, the colors are fresh and bright, has never been framed. About the artist: Born in Holland, Dutch artist Frans Horbach first visited New York when he was 17 years old, traveling on a cargo ship from Rotterdam, just as his fellow country man Willem de Kooning had done years before. Two years later he left Holland and emigrated to California. During the years that he lived and worked as a professional artist in America, one of the main sources of artistic influence came from artists belonging to what is now known as the New York school of American lyrical abstract expressionist art - Rothko, Pollock, De Kooning... He was attracted by their ideas, style of work, and more importantly, by their vital energy and uninhibited self-confidence. Horbach's work also was influenced, more subtely perhaps, by his contact with indigeneous Indian people during his journeys in the American South-West and Mexico. These encounters were a rich source of inspiration - they became integral to a philosophical framework which involved the appreciation of physical space in a poetic and artistic sense. In later years, as the result of his long-time interest in oriental art and philosophy, some of his work show a distinct affinity with the aesthetic sensibilities of traditional Japanse...

By Otto Neumann
Located in New Orleans, LA
Otto Neumann (1895-1975) was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker. His monotypes evolved from sharp, angular, black and whites to late abstract prints in a variety of colors. Neumann lived through revolutionary changes in the art world of prewar and postwar Germany. He was a prolific artist in Germany during a time of the country’s unprecedented academic and intellectual growth. His early work shows the influence of both French masters like Cezanne and the contemporary style that was then being developed by German Expressionists like Kirchner. A master printmaker, Neumann was also inspired by the works of Albrecht Durer, whose allegorical subject-matter and unmatched drawing technique Neumann would emulate throughout his career. A lifetime preoccupation with the human figure informs his work, with frieze-like human figures recalling ancient Greek art...
