Bernhard Leitner, born 1938 (Feldkirch, Austria)
Architect and artist, Pioneer of sound, space and light installation art. Leitner studied Architecture at the Technical University in Vienna. Lived from 1968 until 1983 in New York City. Worked first with the Department of City Planning, than as Associate Professor at New York University, Co-director of "Urban Design Studies: Humanistic Perspectives"1983–1986 in Berlin. 1987–2005 Professor for Media Art at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Bernhard Leitner’s work in Sound Architecture and Sound Space Sculpture goes back to his artistic-empirical research (1969–1975) in New York, i.e. to his physical-acoustic analyses on experiences of spaces that are formed, designed and composed with the sculptural material Sound stemming from his interest in architecture, music and dance. Three-dimensional movements of sounds shape new architectural spaces. He was influenced by American Minimalism and Minimalist art. The scale of his work reaches from large permanent urban architectural installations (Le Cylindre Sonore,Paris; Sound Field 1020 Vienna; Sound Space Technical University Berlin) to body-related sculptures (Sound Chair; Vertical Space for one Person; Sound Arch; Sound Suit). As with the work of John Cage even the silences are loaded with meaning. This work combines architectural drawing with a photograph of his work. He was also instrumental in preserving the architectural work of Ludwig Wittgenstein, the Austrian philosopher who was also a one-shot architect. Leitner helped save the single house designed and built in Vienna by Wittgenstein.

HARRY BOWERS
T E N P H O T O G R A P H S
I DON'T LOOK FOR PHOTOGRAPHS I INVENT THEM
I recall my first meeting with Harry Bowers in California a few years ago. As he produced his large-scale prints, I was at first flabbergasted, not only by their size, but by their seamless perfection. Technique appeared to be everything but then technique as technique simply vanished. After the first moment, technique was no longer an issue, but rather a passageway to the imagery.
Suffice it to say about Harry Bowers' working style that he is an obsessive man. Trained as an engineer, he has turned that discipline to art. His lenses, equipment and darkroom, much of it exactingly manufactured by himself to answer certain needs, serve the desire of the artist to take photographic technique to its ultimate perfection in invisibility and transparency. I respect obsession in art, and particularly in photography, because obsession in photography passes beyond the easy, middle ground of image making to a more demanding, more difficult, yet more rewarding end. Bowers' obsession is to eliminate "photography as technique." No grain, no decisive moments, no journalism, or, seemingly, direct autobiographical endeavors appear in his work.
Bowers is an artist of synthesis who controls his environment if only in the studio exactly to his liking. The images he creates are formal structures, saucy stories on occasion, which may offer hints of a darker, more frightening sexuality, but what you see is the end product of an experiment in which nothing save the original insight perhaps is left to chance.
We seem fascinated with the idea of replication of reality in art. Popular painting frequently reproduces a scene "with the accuracy of a photograph," and photographs may "make you feel as though you were right there." The very invisibility of the photographic medium is important to Bowers, in that it allows him to maneuver his subject matter without concern for rendering it in an obvious art medium which would interfere with the nature of the materials he uses. The formal subtleties of Bowers' recent work are as delicious and ambiguous in their interrelationships as the best Cubist collages, yet while those collages always suggest their parts through edge and texture, these photographs present a structure through a surface purity.
Bowers' earlier works, for example, the Skirts I Have Known series, were formed of bits of clothing belonging to Bowers and his wife or found at local thrift shops. These works fused an elegance of pattern and texture, reminiscent of Miriam Shapiro...

Pencil Signed Abstract Geometric Graphic Design Lithograph Print, Bauhaus Artist
By M. Peter Piening
Located in Surfside, FL
M. Peter Piening was born on March 14, 1908 in Grabow, Germany. He began his education at a private school in Italy, studied at the Jesuit school of Kloster Ettal in Bavaria, and attended the German Stettin Gymnasium, where he graduated in 1926. Between 1926 and 1928 Piening studied design at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany. There he was taught by multiple famous twentieth-century artists, including Joseph Albers, Paul Klee and Mies van der Rohe. After receiving his master’s degree from the Bauhaus in 1929, Piening enrolled at the University of Berlin and obtained his PhD in philosophy in 1931.
Piening spent his early career free-lancing as an illustrator and artist for various publishing companies, eventually settling in Paris to work for Condé-Nast’s French publication of Vogue. In 1934 he moved to the United States to work in Condé-Nast’s New York City office. For the next two decades, Piening worked for many important advertising agencies and magazine publishers, including the N. W. Ayer and J. Walker Thompson agencies and Life and Fortune magazines. As art director for Life in the 1930s and for Fortune in the 1940s, Piening completely redesigned the layout of each magazine. He also redesigned the layouts for thirty-four other major American magazines, including Town & Country and Cosmopolitan.
Through his design work, Piening had a great impact on the American public, although the millions who encountered his work most likely never knew his name. Between 1934 and 1964, Piening designed over sixty logos and trademarks for internationally-known products and companies. His most widely-recognized logo may have been the three interlocking rings of Ballantine beer. Piening’s other trademark designs include the Lincoln Zephyr...
