About the Item
Early Summer is one of the six prints in Print Series No.4.
Print series No.4 embodies Teh-Chun Chu’s signature style of lyrical abstraction. Through rich layers of color and spontaneous brushwork, he captures the rhythm of light and energy in motion. Interwoven blocks of red, blue, yellow, and green create a musical harmony that reflects nature’s vitality and the artist’s poetic sensitivity. The titles evoke the moods of spring and summer, inner warmth, and creative freedom, blending emotion, nature, and abstraction into a symphony of color. Merging the fluid rhythm of Eastern calligraphy with the dynamism of Western abstract expressionism, Chu achieves a harmony that defines his global artistic voice.
Born in Nanjing, China, Chu studied under Feng Mian Lin at the National School of Fine Arts in Hangzhou before moving to France in 1949. Influenced by Matisse, Picasso, and Abstract Expressionism, he developed a distinctive fusion of East and West, using color and light to express movement, spirit, and space. Elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1993 and awarded the Grand Cross of the Légion d’Honneur in 2013, Chu is celebrated as one of the most influential Chinese abstract painters of the 20th century.

Chu Teh-Chun
Son and grandson of doctors, scholars and collectors of calligraphy and paintings, Chu Teh Chun was born on October 24, 1920 in China. He entered the Hangzhou School of Fine Arts in 1935. On July 27, 1937, the Sino-Japanese war broke out, causing the exodus of universities to the west of China, reached in Kunming in 1939 in Yunnan and then settled in Songlinkang in Sichuan where professors and students arrived in 1940. In 1941, he was appointed assistant professor in his own school and full professor in 1942 at Nanjing University, near Chongqing. In 1949, he moved to Taipei, and became a professor at the School of Industry, Architecture Section, in 1950. In 1951, he was a professor at the National Normal University where he taught Western painting. On March 29, 1955, Chu Teh-Chun embarked for Europe, and moved to Paris. He paints landscapes of Paris, draws at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, visits the Louvre, galleries and exhibitions. A trip to Spain made him discover the Prado and Goya, Toledo and the works of Greco. In 1956, he discovered "de visu" abstract art, especially during the retrospective Nicolas de Stael. From 1956 to 1961, he met his first successes in Paris, and since 1964, his reputation spread abroad at exhibitions at the Carnegie Art Museum, Pittsburgh, Jerusalem, Athens, and in 1969, at the Biennale of Sao Paulo. In 1976, he returned to the calligraphy he practiced in his youth. In 1983, he sits on the jury of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He travels to Beijing, where he is invited by the Union of Chinese Artists. His fame, part of the West, now extends to Asia. In 1987, the National History Museum of Taipei organized a major retrospective exhibition, allowing him, for the first time in thirty-two years since leaving his country, to show all of his work. Chu Teh-Chun was elected in 1997 at the Academy of Fine Arts, painting section, in the chair of Jacques Despierre and Dean of the Academy of Fine Arts since the death of Marc Saltet (1906-2008). Chu Teh-Chun died in Paris in 2014 at 93 years old.

Spring 69
By Nancy Genn
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Spring 69" 1969 is an original color lithograph by American artist Nancy Genn, b. 1929. It is hand signed, titled and inscribed Artist Proof in pencil by the artist. The size is 23.75 x 34.65 inches. It is in excellent condition, it has very small marks in the back due to tape removal from previous framing, not visible from the front.
About the artist:
Nancy Genn is an American artist living and working in Berkeley, California known for works in a variety of media, including paintings, bronze sculpture, printmaking, and handmade paper rooted in the Japanese washi paper making tradition Her work explores geometric abstraction, non-objective form, and calligraphic mark making, and features light, landscape, water, and architecture motifs. She is influenced by her extensive travels, and Asian craft, aesthetics and spiritual traditions.
Genn's first noted solo exhibition was in 1955 at Gump's Gallery in San Francisco. She received international recognition through her inclusion in French art critic Michel Tapié’s seminal text Morphologie Autre (1960), which cited her as one of the most important exponents of post-war informal art. Her abstract expressionist paintings of this period, continuing through the mid-1970s, featured all-over compositions of colorful layers of gestural brushwork and calligraphic mark making resembling asemic writing.
In 1961, Genn began creating bronze sculptures using the lost-wax casting method. Influenced by noted sculptor and family friend Claire Falkenstein, who used open-formed structures in her work, Genn cast forms woven from long grape vine cuttings, and produced vessels, fountains, fire screens, a menorah, a lectern, and, notably, the Cowell Fountain (1966) at UC Santa Cruz. In 1963 her sculptural work was exhibited with Berkeley artists Peter Voulkos and Harold Paris in the influential exhibition Creative Casting curated by Paul J. Smith at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York.
Genn was one of the first American artists to express herself through handmade paper, first receiving wide recognition via exhibitions at Susan Caldwell Gallery, New York, beginning in 1977, and in traveling exhibitions with Robert Rauschenberg and Sam Francis. In 1978-1979, supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and Japan Creative Arts Fellowship, she studied papermaking in Japan, visiting local paper craftspeople, working in Shikenjo studio in Saitama Prefecture,[5] and exhibiting her work in Tokyo. She also learned techniques from Donald Farnsworth...
