  • Old Glory
    By Judy Ledgerwood
    Located in Bloomington, IL
"Old Glory" is a unique monotype from a series of prints by Judy Ledgerwood published by Manneken Press in 2020. Rather than using ink, the artist painted directly on a sanded acrylic plate with watercolor paints. The impervious surface of the plate allowed the paint to flow, pool, settle and dry in ways that are distinct from painting in an unmediated manner on paper. When dry, the plate was printed onto damp Hahnemühle Copperplate paper; the moisture in the paper reactivated the watercolor paint and the pressure exerted by the press transferred the image, resulting in a one-of-a-kind monotype print. In "Old Glory" Ledgerwood alludes to the American flag in its rectangular format and red, white and blue color scheme. The artist's signature, title and date are verso, in pencil, and the Manneken Press blindstamp is impressed into the lower left corner of the print. Since the 1980’s Judy Ledgerwood has been exploring light, color, and space in paintings that combine the formal vocabulary of concrete abstraction with influences from pop culture to create vividly colored compositions. She combines decorative patterning, elements of textile design and other traditionally female crafts, with bold color and assertive brush strokes, traits associated with the historically male-dominated tradition of gestural abstraction. Often using stereotypically “feminine” elements, such as pastel colors and stylized floral patterns, Ledgerwood merges formalist and feminist concerns in works that are both sensual and subversive, with the ability to resonate beyond their initial impact. Judy Ledgerwood has received awards from The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts; and Illinois Art Council. Ledgerwood has also received an Artadia Award and a Tiffany Award...
