About the Item
Red Eye #3 from At the Center of Seeing carries an especially charged and enigmatic energy.
At its core, a glowing orb hovers in a dark void, as if suspended between emergence and eclipse. Surrounding it, fiery red forms open like a portal or aperture, simultaneously floral and architectural, enclosing and revealing. Below, a faint humanoid presence seems to materialize, a spectral figure gazing upward toward the radiance.
This piece feels like a vision of initiation—the moment of staring into a source of overwhelming light, an inner sun. Red Eye #3 centers on a singular point of illumination, a meditative flame around which the rest of the form unfolds. It hovers between menace and transcendence, demanding surrender to its intensity.
This archival pigment print is printed on Epson Enhanced Matte paper. Image and paper size is 27.5" x 16" with hand torn edges. Signed within the image, lower right.

In this recent work, the artist has focused on the production of abstract painterly images using a variety of digital methods and processes. These new images are at, what he calls, the “Center of Seeing” - closeups of a moment in time and space from the center of his digitally made kaleidoscopic videos. These captured images contain circle, star, or other primal geometric shapes – some resembling mandalas or flowers of a new interior space. Spiritual, psychological, with an emanating quality of light, they are vaguely familiar yet new.
Mr. Cruz is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant. His first solo show was at White Columns, New York City in 2003. His last solo show “I’ll Take you There” was at the Olympia Project, Bushwick, in 2020. His studio is located in the Flower District in Manhattan.

Gary Cruz
Gary Cruz begins his creative process with the camera on his phone. Trained as an architect and designer, Cruz has a particular interest in creating and conflating depth within the pictorial plane. His final images compress space where the back is front and outside is inside. Past, present and future coexist simultaneously in his work where space is ambiguous. The works embody the duality of contemporary photographic techniques and the tradition of gestural painting. Cruz earned a degree in architecture from the University of Texas, Austin, Texas. He attended the Bronx Museum of the Arts, AIM Program, Bronx, New York. Cruz is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant and Robert Rauschenberg Change Inc. Grant. A native of Texas, Cruz now lives and works in New York City.
