About the Item

Retina #9, edition of 2 of 3, is part of the artist's "At The Center of Seeing" Series. This image radiates with a quiet luminosity, its pale gold and ivory tones softening into a glowing hexagonal center. The geometry is gentle yet precise, framed by curving dark lines that arc like protective branches or the tracery of stained glass. At the bottom, two almond-shaped forms echo the suggestion of eyes or seeds, grounding the image in something both human and organic. It feels less like a fixed object than a pulse of light—an inner sun caught at the threshold of vision. As with others in the series, the work transforms the fleeting movement of Cruz’s kaleidoscopic videos into an emblematic stillness. Here, the effect is contemplative, like looking into a mandala that both gathers and releases energy, an invitation to pause at the center of perception itself. This archival pigment print is printed on Epson Enhanced Matte paper. Image size is 45" x 33" on 48" x 36" paper size. Signed in pencil, within the image, lower right. Framing is recommended before shipping. All work is shipped flat, not rolled. In this recent work, the artist has focused on the production of abstract painterly images using a variety of digital methods and processes. These new images are at, what he calls, the “Center of Seeing” - closeups of a moment in time and space from the center of his digitally made kaleidoscopic videos. These captured images contain circle, star, or other primal geometric shapes – some resembling mandalas or flowers of a new interior space. Spiritual, psychological, with an emanating quality of light, they are vaguely familiar yet new. Mr. Cruz is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant. His first solo show was at White Columns, New York City in 2003. His last solo show “I’ll Take you There” was at the Olympia Project, Bushwick, in 2020. His studio is located in the Flower District in Manhattan.

EM-104 Geshe (Abstract Photography) Pigment on canvas - Unframed. Edition of 3. The Emanations series is an attempt to express the spiritual potential of the most essential aspect of photography: light. Each work in the series began its evolution as a scanned image of a Buddhist thangka—a spiritual painting of a Buddhist deity—which was then blurred and stretched until all that remained was a distilled image of color and form. These reduced images were then printed onto canvases, resulting in what Kane refers to as elemental “representations of the light bodies of the Buddhas.” Bill Kane...
