About the Item
A study in grays, this signed and numbered etching is by celebrated artist Gretchen Dow Simpson (1939–2025), whose distinctive architectural paintings appeared on 58 of “The New Yorker” magazine’s noteworthy covers between 1974 and 1993. With the artistic viewpoint of a native New Englander, Simpson was renowned for a unique style that balanced abstract composition using realistic subject matter, as exemplified in this offering. Here, her clean lines, strong geometric focus and "photographer's eye" for composition brings forth the interplay of light and shadow beyond a mere rendering of what’s there. Rather the feeling expressed here seems to fit perfectly with the restful appeal of a remote, car-free spot located 10 miles off the coast of Maine that is Monhegan Island.
