About the Item
Guido Molinari (1933-2004) is one of Canada's most beloved abstract painters. Notable among his accomplishments was his representation of Canada at the 1968 Venice Biennale.
Molinari was one of the key figures (along with Yves Gaucher) of Les Plasticiens. Caviar20 highly recommends this article that contrasts their efforts with what was happening in New York City during the late 1950s and into the sixties.
A disciple of Barnett Newman, Molinari's most iconic works depict alternating bands or blocks of solid color. While Molinari is not immediately associated with international movements such as Hard-Edge Abstraction, Minimalism, or Op Art, his work can be understood in relation to them. (With this in mind, it would be interesting to compare and contrast Molinari with Gene Davis, another artist famous for stripes).
"Deux Marrons" is a subtly hued screenprint that rewards patient looking. Translating to "Two Browns," the image is composed of rich, dark mauve, green, black, and blue. Hard-edge bands of colour overlap and mingle, creating a sense of pictorial depth through perceived vibrations. This meticulously orchestrated composition is a paradigm of Molinari's oeuvre.
Over the last few years, Molinari canvases have sold on the secondary market for over $100,000. This is a rare opportunity to acquire an affordable, iconic example from the revered Canadian artist.
Molinari's works can be found in the permanent collections of nearly every major Canadian museum as well as the MoMA and the Guggenheim.
