Hannes Harrs
Abstract Shield II Trial Print

1979

About the Item

Hannes Harrs was a prominent South African artist known for his work as a painter, sculptor, and printmaker. Born in Germany in 1927, his fascination with African culture began early, influenced by artifacts brought to him by his uncle. After moving to South Africa in 1950, Harrs studied at the Johannesburg School of Arts and became renowned for his abstract works that reflect the colors and textures of the continent. His art seamlessly integrates traditional African imagery with contemporary techniques, showcasing both technical precision and creative innovation. Throughout his career, he exhibited internationally and left a lasting legacy in various prestigious collections across South Africa and beyond. 'Abstract Shield II Trial Print' was exhibited as part of 'Modern Masters V', the fifth iteration of EBONY/CURATED's annual exhibition, held in our Cape Town Gallery, focusing on modern artworks produced in Southern Africa prior to 2000. This broad selection highlights fourteen very familiar and less known artists who worked in a variety of mediums, differing influences and distinct visual languages.
