About the Item

Harold Town is renowned in Canada for his prolific, versatile and dynamic body of work. Town was dubbed as the "Picasso of Canada" for his ever-changing aesthetic and perennial creativity. He experimented with illustration and surrealism, while his reputation was established with a series of unique prints ("Single Autographic Prints") that included elements of collage. During the early 1960's he completed intricate abstract canvases, yet by the end of the 1970's he was working on stylized figuration with his "Toy Horse" and later the "Muscleman" series. His "Stretch" works were initially received with critical ambivalence. Today, these works look remarkably contemporary with their almost minimal forms and hyper-sweet palette. For the uninitiated, many assume this body of work to be brand new. Caviar20 is excited to be offering this timeless and dynamic example from Harold Town's oeuvre.

Harold Town (1924-1990) remains one of the most accomplished and fascinating characters from the "Painters Eleven" group. While Town coined the group's name (based on the number of artists who simply attended their first meeting) his output was diverse, ever-changing and not restricted to painting. Somewhat ironically, Town's first significant body of work, which established his reputation, was a group of monotype - which he called "Single Autographic Prints" Town was introduced to lithography by fellow Painters Eleven member Oscar Cahen...
