About the Item

This exquisite heliogravure after Henri Matisse (1869–1954), titled Le Cirque (The Circus), from Henri Matisse, Jazz, originates from the 1983 second edition published by George Braziller, Inc., New York, and printed by Ernst Wartelsteiner, Munich, West Germany. Issued under the supervision of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, this authorized American edition faithfully interprets the original 1947 Verve publication, which remains one of the most celebrated fine art publications of the 20th century. In Le Cirque, Matisse transforms the lively atmosphere of the circus into a dynamic orchestration of form and color, where acrobats, clowns, and animals are distilled into pure rhythmic abstraction. The composition embodies Matisse’s fascination with motion, performance, and the joy of creation—a theme that echoes throughout the Jazz series. Executed as a heliogravure on velin paper, this work measures 15 x 22.5 inches, with centerfold as issued. Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued. The edition exemplifies the masterful craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail of Ernst Wartelsteiner’s atelier, honoring the visual and tactile qualities of Matisse’s original pochoir cut-outs. All examples were signed by the artist. It was also released in C albums containing exclusively all the boards of the album. Example number XLIII. Facsimile of the colophon to the original edition of CCL examples, signed by the artist and published by Teriade for Editions Verve on 30 September 1947. About the Publication: Henri Matisse’s Jazz stands as one of the most revolutionary fine art publications of the 20th century—a culmination of the artist’s lifelong exploration of color, movement, and form. Originally conceived and published in 1947 by Teriade for Editions Verve, the portfolio paired Matisse’s bold paper cut-out compositions with his poetic handwritten reflections on art and life. The 1983 George Braziller second edition, produced in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art, New York, faithfully recreates the 20 color plates and accompanying texts of the original Verve edition using the heliogravure process to capture the vibrancy and texture of the gouache decoupages. Printed by Ernst Wartelsteiner in Munich and bound by R. Oldenbourg GmbH, this second edition sought to preserve the visual intensity and tactile essence of Matisse’s late style, offering a museum-quality publication of one of modern art’s most iconic fine art works. Through Jazz, Matisse transcended the boundaries of traditional media, transforming cut paper into pure color and emotion—a visual symphony of joy, rhythm, and creative freedom. About the Artist: Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was a French painter, sculptor, draughtsman, and printmaker whose revolutionary vision redefined modern art through his daring use of color, line, and form. Celebrated as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, Matisse led the Fauvist movement and devoted his life to the pursuit of balance, beauty, and emotional expression in visual art. His early works burst with vibrant hues and liberated brushwork, while his later “cut-out” compositions achieved a poetic simplicity that transformed the relationship between color and space. Deeply influenced by the work of Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh, and Georges Seurat, as well as by the rhythmic patterns of Islamic art, Byzantine mosaics, and Japanese prints, Matisse forged a new visual language that celebrated joy, movement, and serenity. He was part of an extraordinary generation of artists who shaped the evolution of modernism, maintaining lifelong dialogue and friendly rivalry with contemporaries such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Andre Derain, Albert Marquet, and Raoul Dufy—peers who, like him, sought to expand the expressive potential of color and composition. Matisse’s influence extended across generations, inspiring modern and contemporary masters including Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, each of whom drew upon his fearless experimentation and refined visual harmony. His paintings, sculptures, and works on paper are held in the most prestigious museums in the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Tate, and the Hermitage Museum, where his art continues to symbolize the essence of creativity and human emotion. The highest price ever paid for a Henri Matisse artwork is approximately $80.8 million USD, achieved in 2018 at Christie's New York for Odalisque couchee aux magnolias (1923).
